Association between organisational and workplace cultures, and patient outcomes: systematic review.

  • Jeffrey Braithwaite‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2017‎

Every organisation has a unique culture. There is a widely held view that a positive organisational culture is related to positive patient outcomes. Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses statement, we systematically reviewed and synthesised the evidence on the extent to which organisational and workplace cultures are associated with patient outcomes.

Association between statin use and herpes zoster: systematic review and meta-analysis.

  • Lailai Fan‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2019‎

Statins are commonly prescribed worldwide. In addition to being potent lipid-lowering agents, statins have immunomodulating properties that may increase the risk of varicella zoster virus reactivation. This adverse effect may have substantial public health implications.

Association between organisational and workplace cultures, and patient outcomes: systematic review protocol.

  • J Braithwaite‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2016‎

Despite widespread interest in the topic, no current synthesis of research is available analysing the linkages between organisational or workplace cultures on the one hand, and patient outcomes on the other. This protocol proposes a systematic review to analyse and synthesise the literature to date on this topic. The resulting review will discuss characteristics of included studies in terms of the type of healthcare settings researched, the measurements of organisational and workplace culture, patient outcomes measured and the influence of these cultures on patient outcomes.

Association between retinal markers and cognition in older adults: a systematic review.

  • Varshanie Jeevakumar‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2022‎

Exploring the association between khat use and psychiatric symptoms: a systematic review.

  • Betsy Edwards‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2022‎

Consumption of the drug khat is high across East Africa and the South-Western Arabian Peninsula despite evidence for its adverse psychiatric effects. This systematic review aims to explore cross-sectional research in the field to determine the strength of the association between khat use and psychiatric symptoms METHODS: Six databases were searched in October 2021-Ovid Medline, Embase, APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus and Proquest-using the following search terms: "khat" OR "qat" OR "qaad" OR "catha" OR "miraa" OR "mairungi" AND "depression" OR "anxiety" OR "mania" OR "psych*" OR "schiz*" OR "mental" OR "hallucinations" OR "delusions" OR "bipolar". Eligible studies were cross-sectional studies of any population or setting comparing the prevalence of psychiatric symptoms in long term or dependent khat users with non-users. The quality of each study was appraised by the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. A meta-analysis was planned using a random effects model to produce an OR with 95% CIs-using the Mantel-Haenszel method-alongside an I2 statistic to represent heterogeneity. The quality of this meta-analysis was appraised using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) scoring system.

Association between bronchopulmonary dysplasia and cerebral palsy in children: a meta-analysis.

  • Xiaoyun Gou‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2018‎

To investigate the association between bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) and the risk of cerebral palsy (CP) in children.

The association between human herpesvirus infections and stroke: a systematic review protocol.

  • Harriet J Forbes‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2017‎

After primary infection, human herpesviruses establish latency and persist lifelong. Periodic virus reactivation can lead to serious inflammatory complications. Recent research suggests that herpesvirus reactivation may also be linked to acute stroke. An improved understanding of this relationship is vital to inform public health prevention strategies. We will review the evidence regarding the role of human herpesviruses in triggering stroke.

Genome-wide association study of perioperative myocardial infarction after coronary artery bypass surgery.

  • Miklos D Kertai‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2015‎

Identification of patient subpopulations susceptible to develop myocardial infarction (MI) or, conversely, those displaying either intrinsic cardioprotective phenotypes or highly responsive to protective interventions remain high-priority knowledge gaps. We sought to identify novel common genetic variants associated with perioperative MI in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting using genome-wide association methodology.

Discovery of URAT1 SNPs and association between serum uric acid levels and URAT1.

  • Sung Kweon Cho‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2015‎

Human urate transporter 1 (URAT1) is a member of the organic anion transporter family (SLC22A12) that primarily regulates the renal tubular reabsorption of uric acid. This case-control study was designed to analyse whether hURAT1 might also be a candidate gene for hyperuricaemia or hypouricaemia.

Association between early bronchiolitis and the development of childhood asthma: a meta-analysis.

  • Guizuo Wang‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2021‎

Early life bronchiolitis has been hypothesised to be associated with the subsequent risk of persistent wheezing or asthma. However, the link remains controversial. The objective of our study was to evaluate the association between bronchiolitis before 2 years of age and the late-onset wheezing/asthma.

Association of cognitive reserve with stroke outcome: a protocol for a systematic review.

  • Laura Gallucci‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2022‎

The concept of cognitive reserve (CR) was introduced to account for individual differences in the clinical manifestation of neurodegenerative diseases. Though several mechanisms and risk factors are shared between neurodegeneration and stroke, the effect of CR on poststroke functional outcome has been poorly addressed. This systematic review aims to synthesise the available research evidence on the association of CR with stroke outcome, in order to implement the understanding of interindividual variability in stroke outcome and to improve its prediction.

Association between sepsis and retinopathy of prematurity: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Association between postsurgical pain and heart rate variability: protocol for a scoping review.

  • Vincent So‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2021‎

Surgical interventions can elicit neuroendocrine responses and sympathovagal imbalance, ultimately affecting cardiac autonomic function. Cardiac complications account for 30% of postoperative complications and are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality following non-cardiac surgery. One cardiovascular parameter, heart rate variability (HRV), has been found to be predictive of postoperative morbidity and mortality. HRV is defined as variation in time intervals between heartbeats and is affected by cardiac autonomic balance. Furthermore, altered HRV has been shown to predict cardiovascular events in non-surgical settings. In multiple studies, experimentally induced pain in healthy humans leads to reduced HRV suggesting a causal relationship. In a different studies, chronic pain has been associated with altered HRV, however, in the setting of clinical pain conditions, it remains unclear how much HRV impairment is due to pain itself versus autonomic changes related to analgesia. We aim to review the available evidence describing the association between postsurgical pain and HRV alterations in the early postoperative period.

Association of subclinical atherosclerosis and cognitive decline: a community-based cross-sectional study.

  • Yao Lu‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2022‎

Growing burden of dementia was considered as a global public health priority as its epidemic scale rises with the world's population increases in age. In the absence of effective treatment, early identification of decline in cognitive function and risk factors that lead to the onset of dementia is a critical issue. Subclinical atherosclerosis may be a potential risk factor for cognitive impairment and progression to dementia. Research is needed to identify which subclinical atherosclerosis risk factors can better predict cognitive decline.

Association of GDF1 rs4808863 with fetal congenital heart defects: a case-control study.

  • Juan Zhang‎ et al.
  • BMJ open‎
  • 2015‎

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common fetal defects and the most important cause of child mortality and morbidity.
