Bioinformatics is a relatively new field of science that incorporates the principles of biology and computer science. It is mainly concerned with collecting, storing, and retrieving data from large databases. Ever since the successful completion of the Human Genome Project, there has been an exponential growth in the volumes of biological data that is being generated worldwide. The evolution of bioinformatics has made it possible to access these databases and apply the information for better research. One discipline that has been benefitted from the advent of bioinformatics is oral pathology. Oral pathology is a branch of dentistry which deals with the diseases of the head and neck region. Remarkable progress has been made in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases with the aid of bioinformatics. This article attempts to review the evolution and progress of dental informatics as a specialty and its applications in oral pathology.

Maintains and provides archival, retrieval and analytical resources for biological information. Central DDBJ resource consists of public, open-access nucleotide sequence databases including raw sequence reads, assembly information and functional annotation. Database content is exchanged with EBI and NCBI within the framework of the International Nucleotide Sequence Database Collaboration (INSDC). In 2011, DDBJ launched two new resources: DDBJ Omics Archive and BioProject. DOR is archival database of functional genomics data generated by microarray and highly parallel new generation sequencers. Data are exchanged between the ArrayExpress at EBI and DOR in the common MAGE-TAB format. BioProject provides organizational framework to access metadata about research projects and data from projects that are deposited into different databases.
View all literature mentionsDatabase to catalog experimentally determined interactions between proteins combining information from a variety of sources to create a single, consistent set of protein-protein interactions that can be downloaded in a variety of formats. The data were curated, both, manually and also automatically using computational approaches that utilize the the knowledge about the protein-protein interaction networks extracted from the most reliable, core subset of the DIP data. Because the reliability of experimental evidence varies widely, methods of quality assessment have been developed and utilized to identify the most reliable subset of the interactions. This CORE set can be used as a reference when evaluating the reliability of high-throughput protein-protein interaction data sets, for development of prediction methods, as well as in the studies of the properties of protein interaction networks. Tools are available to analyze, visualize and integrate user's own experimental data with the information about protein-protein interactions available in the DIP database. The DIP database lists protein pairs that are known to interact with each other. By interact they mean that two amino acid chains were experimentally identified to bind to each other. The database lists such pairs to aid those studying a particular protein-protein interaction but also those investigating entire regulatory and signaling pathways as well as those studying the organization and complexity of the protein interaction network at the cellular level. Registration is required to gain access to most of the DIP features. Registration is free to the members of the academic community. Trial accounts for the commercial users are also available.
View all literature mentionsA database of three-dimensional structural information about nucleic acids and their complexes. In addition to primary data, it contains derived geometric data, classifications of structures and motifs, standards for describing nucleic acid features, as well as tools and software for the analysis of nucleic acids. A variety of search capabilities are available, as are many different types of reports. NDB maintains the macromolecular Crystallographic Information File (mmCIF).
View all literature mentionsTHIS RESOURCE IS NO LONGER IN SERVICE. Documented on March 17, 2022. Designed to capture protein function, defined at molecular level as set of other molecules with which protein interacts or reacts along with molecular outcome. Archives biomolecular interaction, complex and pathway information. A web-based system is available to query, view and submit records. BIND continues to grow with the addition of individual submissions as well as interaction data from the PDB and a number of large-scale interaction and complex mapping experiments using yeast two hybrid, mass spectrometry, genetic interactions and phage display.
