Notes: The BN homozygous Aire mutant rats were derived from founder rats that were backcrossed in a Sprague Dawley (SD; outbred strain) background for six generations to obtain AIRE-deficient SD rats. The original founder were from BN mutants carrying the mutations created by ZFN reagents targeting to a DNA sequence 59-TGCCACCCAGACCCCCCACAAAGAGAAGAGCCCTGGAAGAG- 39 in exon 3 of the Aire gene. This mutant carriesa 17-bp deletion in the nuclear localization signal sequence, causing a premature stop codon.
