Notes: Axenic breeders were obtained at F143 by Taconic in 1984 from the NIH Animal Genetic Resource. Origin of the strain is as follows: to NIH in 1951 from Heston; to Heston in 1949 from Curtis, Columbia University Institute for Cancer Research. To preserve genetic continuity, Taconics F344 foundation colony is maintained in gnotobiotic isolators and the strain is periodically reestablished with breeding pairs from NIH. Taconic
