Several reports have suggested a possible association between the interleukin (IL)-8-251A/T single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and the susceptibility to coronary artery disease (CAD). Due to inconclusive results of the studies so far, we conducted a meta-analysis to systematically summarize the studies on the association between this SNP and CAD risk. A systematic literature search identified 9 case-control studies (3752 cases and 4219 controls) on the IL-8-251A/T polymorphism. We observed a significant association between different genetic forms of -251A/T SNP and CAD risk, like the allele model (A vs T: odds ratio [OR] 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02-1.27, P = .02), dominant model (AA + AT vs TT: OR 1.20, 95% CI 1.01-1.43, P = .042), recessive model (AA vs AT + TT: OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.03-1.27, P = .01), and homozygous model (AA vs TT: OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.01-1.56, P = .037), whereas the heterozygote model did not show any significant association (AT vs TT: OR 1.16, 95% CI 0.98-1.38, P = .091). Furthermore, significant heterogeneity was observed among studies in terms of all genetic models, except the recessive model. Analysis of the ethnic subgroups revealed a significantly higher risk of CAD in the East Asian population carrying this SNP, and the heterogeneity among the studies regarding the East Asian population was decreased after subgroup analysis. The results of this meta-analysis suggest that the IL-8-251A/T SNP may increase the risk of CAD, especially in people of East Asian ethnicity. Further large-scale, multicenter epidemiological studies are warranted to validate this finding.
Early detection and diagnosis of high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or higher (CIN2+) is critical for a good prognosis and appropriate treatment. The chief aim of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic performance of folate receptor-mediated staining solution detection (FRD) for CIN2+.
Numerous reports have explored the prognostic value of pretransplant serum C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients receiving allogeneic stem cell transplant (ASCT), but the results remain conflicting. Therefore, we performed a meta-analysis to comprehensively assess the prognostic value of pretransplant serum CRP in patients receiving ASCT.
Pre-transplantation serum ferritin (SF) has been considered to be a potential prognostic biomarker in patients undergoing allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allogeneic HSCT), but this conclusion remains controversial. Thus, we performed a meta-analysis to investigate the prognostic significance of pre-transplantation SF in patients undergoing allogeneic HSCT.
Emerging evidence suggests that low-level laser therapy (LLLT) for plantar fasciitis (PF) may be beneficial. However, the convincing study investigating its effectiveness for treatment of PF was scarce. Therefore, a systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to assess whether LLLT significantly relieve pain of patients with PF.
Most of the previous studies combined all types of intramedullary ependymomas without providing accurate pathological subtypes. In addition, it was very difficult to evaluate the factors associated with postoperative outcomes of patients with different pathological subtypes of intramedullary Grade II ependymomas by traditional meta-analysis. This study evaluated the factors related with postoperative outcomes of patients with intramedullary Grade II ependymomas.
Glaucoma is the second most blinding eye disease in the world. Currently, lowering the intraocular pressure through various methods is the main treatment of glaucoma. Acupuncture has been effectively and safely used in the treatment of glaucoma. However, the evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture in the treatment of glaucoma is controversial, leading to inconsistent findings from systematic evaluations at abroad and home. Therefore, this protocol aims to provide a multivariate evaluation on the quality of evidences from current systematic reviews (SRs) and/or meta-analyzes (MAs) of acupuncture in the treatment of glaucoma, and literature quality, thus providing an intuitive and reliable evidence synthesis and basis for clinical decision making.
The prevalence of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the elderly population aged 60 to 84 years ranges from 6.7% to 25.2%, and the effective prevention and reversal of MCI progression to Alzheimer disease (AD) is crucial. The mini mental state examination (MMSE) is the most commonly used screening tool in Chinese outpatient clinics, with sufficient sensitivity and specificity to allow useful stratification from average to abnormal with adequate consideration of age and education.
Previous studies have shown that traditional Chinese medicine decoction (TCMD) could ameliorate the clinical symptoms and laboratory indicators of gouty arthritis (GA) patients. However, few investigations have been conducted on the efficacy and safety of TCMD for GA, the underlying mechanism of TCMD for GA, and the relationship between the TCMD active ingredients and GA targets.
We performed this meta-analysis to evaluate the effects of epidural anesthesia and local anesthesia on the surgical outcomes of lumbar disc herniation (DH).Electronic databases including PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and the Chinese Academic Journal Full-text Database were searched to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that reported on the effects of local anesthesia and epidural anesthesia in lumbar DH surgical management. Evaluation indicators included: onset time of anesthesia, patient satisfaction, and the rate of adverse effects. There were 6 RCTs with a total of 606 patients in this meta-analysis: 274 cases in the local anesthesia group and 332 in the epidural anesthesia group. This meta-analysis demonstrated that the epidural anesthesia group had a better analgesic effect, a lower adverse effect rate (mean difference [MD] = 0.21, 95% confidence interval [CI] [0.08, 0.54], P = .001) and a better satisfaction rate: (MD = 6.54, 95% CI [2.77, 15.45], P < .0001). The duration of anesthesia was not statistically significant.Epidural anesthesia is a better choice for lumbar DH surgery compared to local anesthesia.
The incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC) is increasing year by year worldwide, and it is listed as one of the refractory diseases by World Health Organization. In addition to typical intestinal manifestations such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, mucus, pus, and bloody stool, it can also accompany multiorgan and multisystem extraintestinal manifestations, seriously affecting the life and work of patients. Furthermore, UC patients with a tremendous psychological pressure and affects their physical and mental health. In recent years, many complementary and alternative therapies have been used for treatment of UC, but only pair-wised drugs have been evaluated in the traditional meta-analyses and some results are inconsistent. Consequently, it is essential to propose a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis to discuss the efficacy and safety of complementary and alternative therapies in the treatment of UC.
Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused a worldwide epidemic since its discovery. The outbreak of virus infection has aroused great concern of the World Health Organization (WHO). COVID-19 is highly infectious and has a high infection rate. So far, no specific drug has been found to cure it. China as one of the first countries attacked by epidemic has shown outstanding in fighting against the COVID-19. The contribution of traditional Chinese medicine can not be ignored. As a kind of representative of traditional Chinese medicine, the Chinese patent medicine injection has significant effect in reducing the clinical symptoms of patients and preventing the deterioration of the disease. However, there is no systematic review of its efficacy and safety. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of Chinese patent medicine injection in the treatment of COVID-19.
Although laparoscopic colorectal cancer resection is an oncologically safe procedure equivalent to open resection, the effects of conversion of a laparoscopic approach to an open approach remain unclear. This study evaluated the cancer characteristic and oncological outcomes associated with conversion of laparoscopic colorectal resection to open surgery.
