The time course of holistic processing is similar for face and non-face Gestalt stimuli.

There is evidence that holistic processing of faces and other stimuli rich in Gestalt perceptual grouping cues recruit overlapping mechanisms at early processing stages, but not at later stages where faces and objects of expertise likely overlap. This has led to suggestions of dual pathways supporting holistic processing; an early stimulus-based pathway (supporting processing of stimuli rich in perceptual grouping cues) and an experience-based pathway (supporting processing of object of expertise), with both pathways supporting face processing. Holistic processing markers are present when upright faces are presented for as little as 50-ms. If the overlap between holistic processing of faces and stimuli rich in grouping cues occurs early in processing, markers of holistic processing for these Gestalt stimuli should be present as early as those for faces. In Experiment 1, we investigate the time-course of the emergence of holistic processing markers for face and non-face Gestalt stimuli. The emergence of these markers for faces and the Gestalt stimuli was strikingly similar; both emerged with masked presentations as little as 50-ms. In Experiment 2, where the stimulus presentation was not masked, thus the presentation duration, but not the post-presentation perceptual processing, was constrained, patterns of holistic processing for these stimuli still did not diverge. These findings are consistent with an early, and possibly extended, temporal locus for the overlap in the holistic processing of faces and non-face stimuli rich in grouping cues.


Functional connectivity pattern in the core face network reflects different mechanisms of holistic face processing measured by the whole-part effect and composite-face effect.

Holistic face processing is a critical component of face recognition. There are two classical measures of holistic face processing: the whole-part effect (WPE) and composite-face effect (CFE). However, the two effects have demonstrated inconsistent pattern of results in behavioral literature. Here, to address whether the WPE and CFE tap different mechanisms of holistic face processing, we examined the neural basis of the two effects at network level in a large sample of participants. With a voxel-wise global brain connectivity approach based on resting-state fMRI, we calculated the within network connectivity (WNC) of each voxel in the core face network (CFN). We found that a cluster in the right occipital face area (rOFA) showed positive correlation between its WNC and the WPE, while a cluster in the right fusiform face area (rFFA) showed negative correlation between its WNC and the CFE. These results suggested that the WPE was related to integration of the rOFA within the CFN, while the CFE was associated with separation of the rFFA from other CFN regions. Further analyses showed that higher WPE was related to stronger connection between the rOFA and bilateral posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS), while larger CFE was associated with weaker connection between the rFFA and bilateral pSTS. In short, our study reveals distinct neural correlates of the two hallmarks of holistic face processing at network level and sheds new light on the different mechanisms of holistic face processing reflected by the two effects.


Dissociations of subliminal and supraliminal self-face from other-face processing: behavioral and ERP evidence.

Self-related information has been found to be processed more quickly and accurately in studies with supraliminal self-stimuli and traditional paradigms such as masked priming. We conducted two experiments to investigate whether subliminal self-face processing enjoys this advantage and the neural correlates of processing self-faces at both subliminal and supraliminal levels. We found that self-faces were quicker than famous-other faces to gain dominance against dynamic noise patterns during prolonged interocular suppression to enter awareness (Experiment 1). Meanwhile, subliminal contrast of self- and famous-other face processing was reflected in a reduced early vertex positive potential (VPP) component, whereas supraliminal self-other face differentiation was reflected in an enhanced N170, as well as a more positive late component (300-580ms, Experiment 2) to the self-face. The clear dissociations of self- and other-face processing found across our two experiments validate the self advantage. Our findings also contribute to understandings of the mechanisms underlying self-face processing at different levels of awareness.


Convergent evolution of face spaces across human face-selective neuronal groups and deep convolutional networks.

The discovery that deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) achieve human performance in realistic tasks offers fresh opportunities for linking neuronal tuning properties to such tasks. Here we show that the face-space geometry, revealed through pair-wise activation similarities of face-selective neuronal groups recorded intracranially in 33 patients, significantly matches that of a DCNN having human-level face recognition capabilities. This convergent evolution of pattern similarities across biological and artificial networks highlights the significance of face-space geometry in face perception. Furthermore, the nature of the neuronal to DCNN match suggests a role of human face areas in pictorial aspects of face perception. First, the match was confined to intermediate DCNN layers. Second, presenting identity-preserving image manipulations to the DCNN abolished its correlation to neuronal responses. Finally, DCNN units matching human neuronal group tuning displayed view-point selective receptive fields. Our results demonstrate the importance of face-space geometry in the pictorial aspects of human face perception.


Critical features for face recognition.

Face recognition is a computationally challenging task that humans perform effortlessly. Nonetheless, this remarkable ability is better for familiar faces than unfamiliar faces. To account for humans' superior ability to recognize familiar faces, current theories suggest that different features are used for the representation of familiar and unfamiliar faces. In the current study, we applied a reverse engineering approach to reveal which facial features are critical for familiar face recognition. In contrast to current views, we discovered that the same subset of features that are used for matching unfamiliar faces, are also used for matching as well as recognition of familiar faces. We further show that these features are also used by a deep neural network face recognition algorithm. We therefore propose a new framework that assumes similar perceptual representation for all faces and integrates cognition and perception to account for humans' superior recognition of familiar faces.


Online and Face-to-Face Performance on Two Cognitive Tasks in Children With Williams Syndrome.

There has been an increase in cognitive assessment via the Internet, especially since the coronavirus disease 2019 surged the need for remote psychological assessment. This is the first study to investigate the appropriability of conducting cognitive assessments online with children with a neurodevelopmental condition and intellectual disability, namely, Williams syndrome. This study compared Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices (RCPM) and British Picture Vocabulary Scale (BPVS) scores from two different groups of children with WS age 10-11 years who were assessed online (n = 14) or face-to-face (RCPM n = 12; BPVS n = 24). Bayesian t-tests showed that children's RCPM scores were similar across testing conditions, but suggested BPVS scores were higher for participants assessed online. The differences between task protocols are discussed in line with these findings, as well as the implications for neurodevelopmental research.


Cost-effectiveness of the mobile application TCApp combined with face-to-face CBT treatment compared to face-to-face CBT treatment alone for patients with an eating disorder: study protocol of a multi-centre randomised controlled trial.

The clinical utility of the existing apps for people with eating disorders (EDs) is not clear. The TCApp has been specifically developed for people with EDs, is based on the principles of Cognitive Behavioural Treatment (CBT) and allows a bidirectional link between the patient and the therapist. The objectives of the study are, first, to assess the clinical efficacy of a combined intervention for Eating Disorders (EDs) that includes an online intervention through the TCApp plus standard face-to-face CBT in comparison to standard face-to-face CBT alone, and second, to examine the cost-effectiveness of the TCApp and identify potential predicting, moderating and mediating variables that promote or hinder the implementation of the TCApp in ED units in Spain.


Chicago Face Database: Multiracial expansion.

Multiracial individuals represent a growing segment of the population and have been increasingly the focus of empirical study. Much of this research centers on the perception and racial categorization of multiracial individuals. The current paper reviews some of this research and describes the different types of stimuli that have been used in these paradigms. We describe the strengths and weaknesses associated with different operationalizations of multiracialism and highlight the dearth of research using faces of real multiracial individuals, which we posit may be due to the lack of available stimuli. Our research seeks to satisfy this need by providing a free set of high-resolution, standardized images featuring 88 real multiracial individuals along with extensive norming data and objective physical measures of these faces. These data are offered as an extension of the widely used Chicago Face Database and are available for download at www.chicagofaces.org for use in research.


Face space representations of movement.

The challenging computational problem of perceiving dynamic faces "in the wild" goes unresolved because most research focuses on easier questions about static photograph perception. This literature conceptualizes face representation as a dissimilarity-based "face space", with axes that describe the dimensions of static images. Some versions express positions in face space relative to a central tendency (norm). Are facial movements represented like this? We tested for representations that accord with an a priori hypothesized motion-based face space by experimentally manipulating faces' motion-based dissimilarity. Because we caricatured movements, we could test for representations of dissimilarity from a motion-based norm. Behaviorally, participants perceived these caricatured expressions as convincing and recognizable. Moreover, as expected, caricature enhanced perceived dissimilarity between facial expressions. Functional magnetic resonance imaging showed that occipitotemporal brain responses, including face-selective and motion-sensitive areas, reflect this face space. This evidence converged across methods including analysis of univariate mean responses (which additionally exhibited norm-based responses), repetition suppression and representational similarity analysis. This accumulated evidence for "representational geometry" shows how perception and visual brain responses to facial dynamics reflect representations of movement-based dissimilarity spaces, including explicit computation of distance from a norm movement.


Examining the neural correlates of within-category discrimination in face and non-face expert recognition.

While expert face discrimination develops naturally in humans, expert discrimination in non-face object categories, such as birds, cars and dogs, is acquired through years of experience and explicit practice. The current study used an implicit visual discrimination paradigm and electroencephalography (EEG) - Fast Periodic Visual Stimulation - to examine whether within-category discrimination of faces and non-face objects of expertise rely on shared mechanisms despite their distinct learning histories. Electroencephalogram was recorded while bird experts and bird novices viewed 60 s sequences of bird images or face images presented at a periodic rate of six images per second (i.e., 6.0 Hz). In the sequence, an adapting base image of a family-level bird (e.g., robin), a species-level bird (e.g., purple finch) or a face (e.g., Face A) was presented repeatedly for four consecutive cycles, followed by a different within-category "oddball" image at every fifth cycle (e.g., warbler, house finch, Face B). A differential response between the adapting base and the oddball images (6.0 Hz/fifth cycle = 1.20 Hz) provided an index of within-category discriminability. The results showed that both experts and novices demonstrated a robust EEG signal of equal magnitudes to the 6.00 Hz base face and bird images at medial-occipital channels and to the oddball 1.20 Hz face and bird images at the more anterior occipito-temporal channels. To examine whether the responses to faces and birds were generated by shared neural mechanisms, we correlated the responses to birds and faces at the participant-level. For the base signal at medial-occipital channels, all object categories positively correlated in both the experts and the novices, as expected given that the base signal indexes visual responses that are shared by all object categories (e.g., low-level). In contrast, for the discrimination signal at the more anterior occipito-temporal channels, the response to family- and species-level birds positively correlated with faces for the experts, but no face-bird association was found for the novices. These findings indicate the existence of partially shared neural mechanisms for within-category discrimination of faces and birds in the experts, but not in the novices.


Spatial tuning of face part representations within face-selective areas revealed by high-field fMRI.

Regions sensitive to specific object categories as well as organized spatial patterns sensitive to different features have been found across the whole ventral temporal cortex (VTC). However, it is unclear that within each object category region, how specific feature representations are organized to support object identification. Would object features, such as object parts, be represented in fine-scale spatial tuning within object category-specific regions? Here, we used high-field 7T fMRI to examine the spatial tuning to different face parts within each face-selective region. Our results show consistent spatial tuning of face parts across individuals that within right posterior fusiform face area (pFFA) and right occipital face area (OFA), the posterior portion of each region was biased to eyes, while the anterior portion was biased to mouth and chin stimuli. Our results demonstrate that within the occipital and fusiform face processing regions, there exist systematic spatial tuning to different face parts that support further computation combining them.


Adherence to Internet-based and face-to-face cognitive behavioural therapy for depression: a meta-analysis.

Internet-based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) is an effective and acceptable treatment for depression, especially when it includes guidance, but its treatment adherence has not yet been systematically studied. We conducted a meta-analysis, comparing the adherence to guided iCBT with the adherence to individual face-to-face CBT.


COMT-Polymorphisms Modulated Functional Profile of the Fusiform Face Area Contributes to Face-Specific Recognition Ability.

Previous studies have shown that face-specific recognition ability (FRA) is heritable; however, the neural basis of this heritability is unclear. Candidate gene studies have suggested that the catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) rs4680 polymorphism is related to face perception. Here, using a partial least squares (PLS) method, we examined the multivariate association between 12 genotypes of 4 COMT polymorphisms (rs6269-rs4633-rs4818-rs4680) and multimodal MRI phenotypes in the human fusiform face area (FFA), which selectively responds to face stimuli, in 338 Han Chinese adults (mean age 20.45 years; 135 males). The MRI phenotypes included gray matter volume (GMV), resting-state fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF), and face-selective blood-oxygen-level-dependent (BOLD) responses (FS). We found that the first COMT-variant component (PLS1) was positively associated with the FS but negatively associated with the fALFF in the FFA. Moreover, participants with the COMT heterozygous-HEA-haplotype showed higher PLS1 FFA-MRI scores, which were positively associated with the FRA in an old/new face recognition task, than those with the COMT homozygous HEA haplotype and HEA non-carriers, suggesting that individuals with an appropriate (intermediate) level of dopamine activity in the FFA might have better FRA. In summary, our study provides empirical evidence for the genetic and neural basis for the heritability of face recognition and informs the formation of neural module functional specificity.


Face liveness detection using defocus.

In order to develop security systems for identity authentication, face recognition (FR) technology has been applied. One of the main problems of applying FR technology is that the systems are especially vulnerable to attacks with spoofing faces (e.g., 2D pictures). To defend from these attacks and to enhance the reliability of FR systems, many anti-spoofing approaches have been recently developed. In this paper, we propose a method for face liveness detection using the effect of defocus. From two images sequentially taken at different focuses, three features, focus, power histogram and gradient location and orientation histogram (GLOH), are extracted. Afterwards, we detect forged faces through the feature-level fusion approach. For reliable performance verification, we develop two databases with a handheld digital camera and a webcam. The proposed method achieves a 3.29% half total error rate (HTER) at a given depth of field (DoF) and can be extended to camera-equipped devices, like smartphones.


Thermal Face Verification through Identification.

This paper reports on a new approach to face verification in long-wavelength infrared radiation. Two face images were combined into one double image, which was then used as an input for a classification based on neural networks. For testing, we exploited two external and one homemade thermal face databases acquired in various variants. The method is reported to achieve a true acceptance rate of about 83%. We proved that the proposed method outperforms other studied baseline methods by about 20 percentage points. We also analyzed the issue of extending the performance of algorithms. We believe that the proposed double image method can also be applied to other spectral ranges and modalities different than the face.


Interaction between the electrical stimulation of a face-selective area and the perception of face stimuli.

We electrically stimulated the face-selective area in epileptic patients while they were performing a face-categorization task. Face categorization was interfered by electrical stimulation but was restored by increasing the visual signal. More importantly, face-categorization interference by electrical stimulation was confined to face-selective electrodes, and the amount of interference was positively correlated with the sensitivity of the face-selective electrodes. These results strongly support the hypothesis that the face-selective area has a direct causal link to face perception.


Insights Into the Delivery of Personalized Nutrition: Evidence From Face-To-Face and Web-Based Dietary Interventions.

Prevention strategies for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a global priority as it has been estimated that NCDs will account for around 73% of worldwide mortality by the year 2020. The adoption of diets that are low in saturated fat, free sugars, and red and processed meats and higher in unsaturated fats, wholegrains, fruit, and vegetables have been shown to reduce the risk of NCDs. With increasing internet use, several nutrition interventions are now being conducted online as well as face-to-face, however it is unclear which delivery method is most effective. Although a consumer preference toward face-to-face dietary advice delivery has been identified previously, interest in delivering web-based dietary advice, and in particular personalized nutrition (PN), has been rising, as internet delivery may be less costly and more scalable. This review compares published face-to-face and web-based dietary interventions to give insight into which dietary method might be more effective for PN. In total, 19 peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials were identified for inclusion in the review. The majority of face-to-face nutrition interventions were successful at facilitating dietary change. Results from web-based nutrition interventions suggested that personalized web-based nutrition interventions may be successful at inducing short-term dietary change compared to standardized dietary interventions, however, minimal evidence of long-term impact has been found across both delivery methods. Results of a trial that compared face-to-face with web-based diet intervention found significantly greater dietary changes in the face-to-face group compared to web-based and control groups. Further controlled comparative studies and cost-benefit analysis are needed to assess whether web-based methods can be used in place of face-to-face interventions for achieving dietary change.


Brain Activity Related to the Judgment of Face-Likeness: Correlation between EEG and Face-Like Evaluation.

Faces represent important information for social communication, because social information, such as face-color, expression, and gender, is obtained from faces. Therefore, individuals' tend to find faces unconsciously, even in objects. Why is face-likeness perceived in non-face objects? Previous event-related potential (ERP) studies showed that the P1 component (early visual processing), the N170 component (face detection), and the N250 component (personal detection) reflect the neural processing of faces. Inverted faces were reported to enhance the amplitude and delay the latency of P1 and N170. To investigate face-likeness processing in the brain, we explored the face-related components of the ERP through a face-like evaluation task using natural faces, cars, insects, and Arcimboldo paintings presented upright or inverted. We found a significant correlation between the inversion effect index and face-like scores in P1 in both hemispheres and in N170 in the right hemisphere. These results suggest that judgment of face-likeness occurs in a relatively early stage of face processing.


Pre-stimulus pattern of activity in the fusiform face area predicts face percepts during binocular rivalry.

Visual input is ambiguous, yet conscious experience is unambiguous. In binocular rivalry the two eyes receive conflicting images, but only one of them is consciously perceived at a time. Here we search for the neural sites of the competitive interactions underlying this phenomenon by testing whether neural pattern activity occurring before stimulus presentation can predict the initial dominant percept in binocular rivalry and, if so, where in the brain such predictive activity is found. Subjects were scanned while viewing an image of a face in one eye and an image of a house in the other eye with anaglyph glasses. The rivalrous stimulus was presented briefly for each trial, and the subject indicated which of the two images he or she preferentially perceived. Our results show that BOLD fMRI multivariate pattern activity in the fusiform face area (FFA) before the stimulus is presented predicts which of the two images will be dominant, suggesting that higher extrastriate areas, such as the FFA, are not only correlated with, but may also be involved in determining the initial dominant percept in binocular rivalry. Furthermore, by examining pattern activity before and after trial onset, we found that pre-trial activity in the FFA for the rivalrous face trials is no more similar to the post-trial activity for the non-rivalrous face trials than to that for the non-rivalrous house trials, indicating a dissociation between neural pattern information, which predicts a given state of awareness, and mean responses, which reflect the state of awareness ultimately achieved.


The India Face Set: International and Cultural Boundaries Impact Face Impressions and Perceptions of Category Membership.

This paper serves three specific goals. First, it reports the development of an Indian Asian face set, to serve as a free resource for psychological research. Second, it examines whether the use of pre-tested U.S.-specific norms for stimulus selection or weighting may introduce experimental confounds in studies involving non-U.S. face stimuli and/or non-U.S. participants. Specifically, it examines whether subjective impressions of the face stimuli are culturally dependent, and the extent to which these impressions reflect social stereotypes and ingroup favoritism. Third, the paper investigates whether differences in face familiarity impact accuracy in identifying face ethnicity. To this end, face images drawn from volunteers in India as well as a subset of Caucasian face images from the Chicago Face Database were presented to Indian and U.S. participants, and rated on a range of measures, such as perceived attractiveness, warmth, and social status. Results show significant differences in the overall valence of ratings of ingroup and outgroup faces. In addition, the impression ratings show minor differentiation along two basic stereotype dimensions, competence and trustworthiness, but not warmth. We also find participants to show significantly greater accuracy in correctly identifying the ethnicity of ingroup faces, relative to outgroup faces. This effect is found to be mediated by ingroup-outgroup differences in perceived group typicality of the target faces. Implications for research on intergroup relations in a cross-cultural context are discussed.
