Nucleus accumbens A region of the brain consisting of a collection of neurons located in the forebrain ventral to the caudate and putamen. (caudoputamen in rodent) and continuous with these structures. There is no distinct boundary between the nucleus accumbens and the caudate/putamen, but in rodents, it can be identified by its lack of traversing fiber bundles in comparison to the dorsal striatum. Its principle neuron is the medium spiny neuron. Together with the neostriatum (caudate nucleus and putamen), the nucleus accumbens forms the striatum. Shell of nucleus accumbens Crescent shaped outer zone of the nucleus accumbens, defined by a combination of chemoarchitecture and afferent and efferent connections. The shell is distinguished from the more centrally located core through the notable reduction in staining for the calcium-binding protein calbindin D28K, which is dense in the core and virtually absent in the shell. WHS11 004 nucleus accumbens Delineation of nucleus accumbens in Waxholm mouse atlas as seen in T2* and T2W weighted volumes. In T2W image, appears as a subtle textural difference between caudate putamen. Bounded by septal nucleus, olfactory bulb; caudate putamen and ventral cerebral cortex. Modified from autosegmentations of Waxholm space generated by Badea. NLX:143706 term ILX:0112640 345.48618

Accumbens Nucleus of CIVM postnatal rat brain atlas The accumbens nucleus forms the major part of the ventral striatum; however, it has a unique appearance on MRI that makes it relatively easy to segment as a distinct structure from the rest of the ventral striatum. This nucleus is most easily segmented in the coronal plane of a diffusion-weighted image (DWI). The rostral border is defined by a low diffusivity (bright on DWI) region just dorsal and medial to the anterior limb of the anterior commissure. More caudally the accumbens becomes a large circular region that completely surrounds the anterior limb of the anterior commissure. The ventral border is defined by the rostral aspect of the ventral pallidum, which appears as a horizontal line of dark (high diffusion) spots on DWI. The dorsal border between the accumbens and the rest of the striatum can be identified based on the start of the dark striations that define the caudate/putamen. The caudal extent of the accumbens ends just rostral to the decussation of the anterior commissure. In general, the accumbens is brighter on DWI (lower diffusion) than surrounding tissue.
