Objective To assess how shoulder specialists have used infiltration in their daily practice. Methods A survey study in which shoulder and elbow specialists answered a questionnaire on the use of infiltration in painful shoulders. Results Most of the doctors (45.9%) have > 10 years of experience in the area and have carried out up to 10 infiltrations in the last 12 months. The main indications for glenohumeral and subacromial infiltration are glenohumeral arthrosis and rotator cuff tendinopathy, respectively. The most used portals are the posterior (52.2%) for glenohumeral infiltration and the lateral (57.5%) for subacromial infiltration. The majority of the doctors (752%) infiltrate in an outpatient setting without imaging methods, and the most commonly used drug is the combination of corticoid and anesthetic. The main contraindication cited is the presence of diabetes, and the most common complication is pain after infiltration. Conclusion Subacromial infiltrations are indicated especially for the treatment of rotator cuff tendinopathies and bursitis, performed by the lateral portal, in an outpatient setting, with low index of long-term complications. Glenohumeral infiltrations are indicated especially for glenohumeral arthrosis, with a combination of a corticoid and anesthetic, performed mostly in an outpatient setting.
Of all the most frequent soft tissue disorders of the shoulder, idiopathic frozen shoulder (IFS) offers the greatest potential for studying proprioception. Studies concerning the presence of proprioception dysfunctions have failed to determine the potential for spontaneous healing of passive shoulder stabilizers (anterior and posterior capsule, middle and inferior gleno-humeral ligaments), its relationship with passive (PJPS) and active (AJPS) shoulder proprioception for internal and external rotation (IR, ER), as well as the isokinetic muscle performance of the internal and external rotators. This study investigates these dependencies in the case of arthroscopic release of IFS.
In Denmark, exercise therapy in combination with work modification is the first-choice treatment for persons with shoulder complaints and high occupational shoulder exposures. To obtain this treatment they must visit several healthcare providers, which makes usual care fragmented and uncoordinated. Therefore, we developed a new intervention which unifies the expertise that is needed. The main hypotheses are that a group-based Shoulder-Café intervention will more effectively reduce (1) shoulder complaints and (2) occupational shoulder exposures than an individual-based Shoulder-Guidance intervention (active control - enhanced usual care).

As reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) cases increase, so too will the need to revise subsequent failures. Many of the complications associated with revising anatomic total shoulder and hemiarthroplasty have been adequately addressed by RSA including glenoid bone deficiency, instability, and functional outcomes. However, the risk for complication when revising a failed reverse prosthesis may be more pronounced with increased bone and soft tissue deficiency. The ability for the reversed prosthesis to accommodate these insufficiencies following a prior reversed prosthesis is unclear.
Chronic shoulder dislocation has been treated by either anatomic shoulder arthroplasty (ASA) or reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA) with encouraging results. Although good results have been reported after both the procedures, several complications such as instability and glenoid failures have also been highlighted. The aim of this study was to aggregate the results that have been reported with the use of ASA or RSA in chronic shoulder dislocation and analyze the instability rates, complication rates, and functional outcomes.
A high proportion of shoulder injuries in table tennis players are common, which is both a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. An understanding of the interaction between biomechanical function of the shoulder and mechanisms of shoulder injuries in table tennis players is necessary to prevent injury and to conduct clinical treatment of the shoulder as soon as possible. The purpose of this minireview was to select the available evidence on the biomechanical characteristics of shoulder movement and potential relationships with various shoulder injuries that are common in table tennis players. Five studies revealed interesting biomechanical characteristics of shoulder movement patterns in table tennis players: large internal rotation torque, an increased torsion-rotation movement, and a greater angular velocity of internal rotation were found. Two studies were noted that were related to specific shoulder injury: glenohumeral internal rotation deficit (GIRD) and impingement syndrome. Unfortunately, it is difficult to draw conclusions on the mechanisms of shoulder injury in table tennis players due to the little evidence available that has investigated shoulder injury mechanisms based on biomechanical characteristics. Future studies should focus on the potential relationship between the biomechanical characteristics of the shoulder and injury prevalence to provide valuable reference data for clinical treatment.
It is unclear whether stemless shoulder prosthesis lead to better clinical outcomes than conventional stemmed shoulder prosthesis. The purpose is to compare clinical outcomes and complication rates after surgery in patients with shoulder arthropathy treated with stemless or conventional stemmed shoulder prosthesis.
There is no differences in abduction, internal rotation, or external rotation strength after reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) with or without subscapularis repair. Repair of the subscapularis can be effective in the setting of rTSA. However, consensus has yet to be reached on whether postoperative strength after rTSA differs based on subscapularis management. The purpose of this review is to evaluate shoulder strength outcomes after rTSA with and without subscapularis tendon repair.
The effects of tranexamic acid (TXA) in the setting of shoulder arthroplasty are unclear. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of TXA in reducing the need for blood transfusions and blood loss in patients undergoing primary total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) and reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA).
Shoulder pain is reported to be highly prevalent and tends to be recurrent or persistent despite medical treatment. The pathophysiological mechanisms of shoulder pain are poorly understood. Furthermore, there is little evidence supporting the effectiveness of current treatment protocols. Although myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) are rarely mentioned in relation to shoulder pain, they may present an alternative underlying mechanism, which would provide new treatment targets through MTrP inactivation. While previous research has demonstrated that trained physiotherapists can reliably identify MTrPs in patients with shoulder pain, the percentage of patients who actually have MTrPs remains unclear. The aim of this observational study was to assess the prevalence of muscles with MTrPs and the association between MTrPs and the severity of pain and functioning in patients with chronic non-traumatic unilateral shoulder pain.
Shoulder pain is a substantial medical and socioeconomic problem in most societies, affecting the ability to work or carry out leisure time activities as well as subsequently influencing physical and psychological well-being. According to a nationwide survey in Finland, 27% of the population reported shoulder pain within the last 30 days. In clinical practice, imaging findings of structural abnormalities are typically thought to explain symptoms, even though such findings are also prevalent in asymptomatic individuals, particularly with increasing age. Overall, there is a paucity of high-quality evidence on the prevalence, clinical relevance and prognosis of 'abnormal' imaging findings of the shoulder.The aim of the Finnish Imaging of Shoulder (FIMAGE) study is fourfold: to assess (1) the prevalence of shoulder symptoms and the most common anatomical variants and imaging abnormalities of the shoulder; (2) the concordance between shoulder symptoms, function and imaging abnormalities; (3) the most important determinants of symptoms, function and imaging abnormalities; and (4) the course of shoulder complaints over 5 years.
Several bone morphological parameters, including the anterior acromion morphology, the lateral acromial angle, the coracohumeral interval, the glenoid inclination, the acromion index (AI), and the shoulder critical angle (CSA), have been proposed to impact the development of rotator cuff tears and glenohumeral osteoarthritis. This study aimed to develop a deep learning tool to automate the measurement of CSA and AI on anteroposterior shoulder radiographs.
Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) has become an increasingly popular surgery for patients with rotator cuff arthropathy, unreconstructible proximal humeral fracture, and end-stage glenohumeral arthritis. The increased annual volume of RTSAs has resulted in more postoperative complications and revision rates between 3.3% and 10.1%. Postoperative infection is one of the most common complications requiring revision surgery after primary RTSA. This study assesses patient-specific risk factors for development of early infection after primary RTSA in a single high-volume shoulder arthroplasty institution.
Existing data on the epidemiology of shoulder arthroplasty are limited to future projections of incidence. However, the prevalence of shoulder arthroplasty (the number of individuals with a shoulder arthroplasty alive at a certain time and its implications for the burden of revision procedures) remains undetermined for the United States. Hence, the purpose of this study was to estimate the prevalence of shoulder arthroplasty in the United States.
