Sex Differences in Countermovement Jump Phase Characteristics.

The countermovement jump (CMJ) is commonly used to explore sex differences in neuromuscular function, but previous studies have only reported gross CMJ measures or have partly examined CMJ phase characteristics. The purpose of this study was to explore differences in CMJ phase characteristics between male and female athletes by comparing the force-, power-, velocity-, and displacement-time curves throughout the entire CMJ, in addition to gross measures. Fourteen men and fourteen women performed three CMJs on a force platform from which a range of kinetic and kinematic variables were calculated via forward dynamics. Jump height (JH), reactive strength index modified, relative peak concentric power, and eccentric and concentric displacement, velocity, and relative impulse were all greater for men (g = 0.58⁻1.79). Relative force-time curves were similar between sexes, but relative power-, velocity-, and displacement-time curves were greater for men at 90%⁻95% (immediately before and after peak power), 47%⁻54% (start of eccentric phase) and 85%⁻100% (latter half of concentric phase), and 65%⁻87% (bottom of countermovement and initial concentric phase) of normalized jump time, respectively. The CMJ distinguished between sexes, with men demonstrating greater JH through applying a larger concentric impulse and, thus, achieving greater velocity throughout most of the concentric phase, including take-off.


Primary sex determination in birds depends on DMRT1 dosage, but gonadal sex does not determine adult secondary sex characteristics.

In birds, males are the homogametic sex (ZZ) and females the heterogametic sex (ZW). Primary sex determination is thought to depend on a sex chromosome gene dosage mechanism, and the most likely sex determinant is the Z chromosome gene Doublesex and Mab-3-Related Transcription factor 1 (DMRT1). To clarify this issue, we used a CRISPR-Cas9-based monoallelic targeting approach and sterile surrogate hosts to generate birds with targeted mutations in the DMRT1 gene. The resulting chromosomally male (ZZ) chicken with a single functional copy of DMRT1 developed ovaries in place of testes, demonstrating the avian sex-determining mechanism is based on DMRT1 dosage. These ZZ ovaries expressed typical female markers and showed clear evidence of follicular development. However, these ZZ adult birds with an ovary in place of testes were indistinguishable in appearance to wild-type adult males, supporting the concept of cell-autonomous sex identity (CASI) in birds. In experiments where estrogen synthesis was blocked in control ZW embryos, the resulting gonads developed as testes. In contrast, if estrogen synthesis was blocked in ZW embryos that lacked DMRT1, the gonads invariably adopted an ovarian fate. Our analysis shows that DMRT1 is the key sex determination switch in birds and that it is essential for testis development, but that production of estrogen is also a key factor in primary sex determination in chickens, and that this production is linked to DMRT1 expression.


Influence of Sex in the Molecular Characteristics and Outcomes of Malignant Tumors.

Sex Hormone Receptor Expression in Craniopharyngiomas and Association with Tumor Aggressiveness Characteristics.

Craniopharyngiomas (CPs) are rare tumors of the sellar and suprasellar regions of embryonic origin. The primary treatment for CPs is surgery but it is often unsuccessful. Although CPs are considered benign tumors, they display a relatively high recurrence rate that might compromise quality of life. Previous studies have reported that CPs express sex hormone receptors, including estrogen and progesterone receptors. Here, we systematically analyzed estrogen receptor α (ERα) and progesterone receptor (PR) expression by immunohistochemistry in a well-characterized series of patients with CP (n = 41) and analyzed their potential association with tumor aggressiveness features. A substantial proportion of CPs displayed a marked expression of PR. However, most CPs expressed low levels of ERα. No major association between PR and ERα expression and clinical aggressiveness features was observed in CPs. Additionally, in our series, β-catenin accumulation was not related to tumor recurrence.

Cattle were some of the first animals domesticated by humans for the production of milk, meat, etc. Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) is defined as longer than 200 bp in non-protein coding transcripts. lncRNA is known to function in regulating gene expression and is currently being studied in a variety of livestock including cattle. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of lncRNA according to sex in Hanwoo cattle.


Sex-related variations in the frequency and characteristics of adverse drug reactions.

Sex-related variations in the clinical effects of drugs may be observed. In an intensive prospective drug surveillance study of 1920 patients hospitalized at the Department of Medicine of the J. J. Aguirre Hospital in Santiago, Chile, the frequency of adverse drug reactions (ADR) was significantly higher in females than in males (p < 0.0005). Women presented more commonly gastrointestinal and cutaneous allergic reactions. In males electrolyte disturbances were more frequent. Drugs inducing ADR were very similar in both sexes. Eighty-three per cent of ADR in males and 93% in females were dose-related effects. Hospitalization was lengthened by a significantly higher proportion of ADR in men than in women. Other ADR's risk fators such as age, number of drugs administered and duration of hospitalization did not account for the differences observed. In males with ADR there was a higher proportion of patients with cirrhosis and renal insufficiency. These findings suggest that sex is a determinant of the frequency and characteristics of ADR.

The susceptibility to neurological and psychiatric disorders reveals sexual dimorphism in the structure and function of human brains. Recent evidence has also demonstrated the sex-related differences in cellular components of the brain, including neurons, microglia, astrocytes, and endothelial cells. Oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs) regulate the neuronal system in various ways and play crucial roles in brain homeostasis beyond their well-known role as a reservoir for mature oligodendrocytes. Although recent studies have shown regional diversities and heterogeneities of OPCs, sex-related differences in OPCs are largely unknown. Here, we revealed transcriptomic differences in OPCs isolated from male and female neonatal rat brains. Furthermore, we demonstrated sex-dependent differences in OPCs regarding proliferation, migration, differentiation, tolerance against ischemic stress, energy metabolism, and the ability to regulate the blood-brain barrier integrity.


Sex differences in characteristics of atrial fibrillation recurrence post surgical pulmonary vein isolation.

EEG Characteristics to Hyperventilation by Age and Sex in Patients With Various Neurological Disorders.

Introduction: Hyperventilation provocation test(s) (HPT) concomitant to electroencephalography (EEG) may detect hidden disorders of the nervous system (CNS). There are various types of abnormal EEG in responses to HPT that provoke different interpretations. However, it is not evident how the onset time of pathological EEG responses to hyperventilation (PERH) reveals dysfunction of the CNS in humans. It is also not clear if age and biological sex affect EEG characteristics in response to HPT. Our previous studies have revealed three types of PERH (disorganization of basic rhythm, paroxysmal discharges, epileptiform activity) concerning the manifestation time of first, second, and third minutes. The current work aims to classify the PERH with regards to age (3-6, 7-12, 13-18, 19-30, 31-50, 50 > year) and the biological sex of the patients. Methods: This study examined the EEG of 985 outpatients with various functional disorders of the CNS. The patients were assigned to one of three experimental groups based on the time occurrence of PERH in response to the HPT. Results: The disorganized basic EEG rhythm in the first, second, third minute of HPT was observed across all age and sex groups. All three types of PERH in the first minute were comparable for both sexes. However, some discrepancies between females compared to males were observed in the second and third minutes. All three types of PERH in the first and the second minutes were found only in women. The second type of PERH has revealed at the second minute of PHT in 13-18-year-old five girls. Conclusion: The three main types of PERH were detected at the first minute in all age groups and sex in patients with various CNS dysfunctions. It is diagnostically informative should be used as a marker during the monitoring of treatment. The specific activity of the brain's response to HPT depends on time, age, sex. The data indicate that taking into account sex differences and age during HPT leads to better results. The sensitivity and severity of the NS reaction toward hypocapnia, stress, and emotion increase in women. Therefore, in such cases should not be recommended to expand functional loads.

Growth Performance, Carcass Characteristics and Meat Quality of Organically Reared Broiler Chickens Depending on Sex.

Given the growing interest of consumers in naturally produced meat, we decided to examine the muscles of Ross 308 broiler chickens kept in an ecological system, with the division into two research groups depending on sex. All the analyses were carried out using the appropriate methods recommended by the AOAC and in accordance with the Polish standards (PN), which are described in detail in the relevant section of the publication. The aim of the experiment was to investigate the effect of sex on the growth performance, carcass traits and meat quality, as well as the fatty acid profile and histological parameters, of the pectoral muscles from organic broiler chickens. A total of 60 one-day-old Ross 308 chickens (half males and half females) were divided into two groups, according to the sex, and reared under organic conditions (Org.) until 82 days of age (ten birds, i.e., five males and five females in each of three pens; replications for experimental groups). Compared with the female group, the male group had a higher final BW and carcass weight (p < 0.05). The males had a better growth and slaughter performance than the females. The meat quality traits and fatty acids content were also affected by sex. The meat from females showed a significantly higher (p < 0.05) protein, dry matter, fiber diameter and shear force and a significantly lower (p < 0.05) fat level than the male group. In this research, the suitability of these fast-growing broilers for natural and organic production systems has been researched with regard to the performance, meat quality and histological characteristics of the muscles.

COVID-19 Clinical Characteristics, and Sex-Specific Risk of Mortality: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Background: The rapidly evolving coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), was declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization on March 11, 2020. It was first detected in the Wuhan city of China and has spread globally resulting in a substantial health and economic crisis in many countries. Observational studies have partially identified different aspects of this disease. There have been no published systematic reviews that combine clinical, laboratory, epidemiologic, and mortality findings. Also, the effect of gender on the outcomes of COVID-19 has not been well-defined. Methods: We reviewed the scientific literature published from January 1, 2019 to May 29, 2020. Statistical analyses were performed with STATA (version 14, IC; Stata Corporation, College Station, TX, USA). The pooled frequency with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was assessed using random effect model. P < 0.05 was considered a statistically significant publication bias. Results: Out of 1,223 studies, 34 satisfied the inclusion criteria. A total of 5,057 patients with a mean age of 49 years were evaluated. Fever (83.0%, CI 77.5-87.6) and cough (65.2%, CI 58.6-71.2) were the most common symptoms. The most prevalent comorbidities were hypertension (18.5%, CI 12.7-24.4) and Cardiovascular disease (14.9%, CI 6.0-23.8). Among the laboratory abnormalities, elevated C-Reactive Protein (CRP) (72.0%, CI 54.3-84.6) and lymphopenia (50.1%, CI 38.0-62.4) were the most common. Bilateral ground-glass opacities (66.0%, CI 51.1-78.0) was the most common CT scan presentation. The pooled mortality rate was 6.6%, with males having significantly higher mortality compared to females (OR 3.4; 95% CI 1.2-9.1, P = 0.01). Conclusion: COVID-19 has caused a significant number of hospitalization and mortality worldwide. Mortality associated with COVID-19 was higher in our study compared to the previous reports from China. The mortality was significantly higher among the hospitalized male group. Further studies are required to evaluate the effect of different variables resulting in sex disparity in COVID-19 mortality.


Characteristics and sex dimorphism of 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase family genes in the olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus.

Sex steroid hormones play important roles in fish sex differentiation, gonadal development and secondary sexual characteristics. Olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus is a valuable commercial marine fish species and has marked sexual dimorphism. However, the mechanisms of action of sex hormones in flounder sex are still unclear. In this study, a total of ten Hsd17b family genes, including Hsd17b3, -4, -7, -8, -9, -10, -12a, -12b, -14 and -15, were identified in the flounder, which encoded critical enzymes acting on sex steroid synthesis and metabolism. Hsd17b genes were distributed on eight chromosomes. Hsd17b12a and -12b were located on chromosomes 19 and 7, respectively. It was speculated that these two genes were just highly similar rather than different transcripts derived from the same gene. According to the results of domain and motif analyses, they all belonged to the SDR superfamily and contained conserved Hsd17b motifs TGxxxGxG, PGxxxT, NNAG and YxxxK. Analysis of amino acid sequences predicted that Hsd17b1, -4, -7, -12a and -14 were hydrophilic proteins. The stability of Hsd17b1, -3 and -12b proteins was predicted to be low. The various Hsd17b family genes differed in tissue expression pattern, and Hsd17b10, -12a and -12b were highly expressed in the flounder ovary. Moreover, throughout gonadal development, Hsd17b3 was highly expressed in the testis, and Hsd17b1, -12a and -12b were highly expressed in the ovary, suggesting that they might play an important role in testosterone synthesis in the testis or estrogen synthesis in the ovary. Activities of Hsd17b3 at stages I-V were all significantly higher in the testis than in the ovary (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Transfection analysis in HEK293T cells showed that Hsd17b1 and -3 were located in both the cytoplasm and nucleus. Additionally, after challenging fish with tamoxifen, Hsd17b3 expression level in the testis decreased significantly (P < 0.01), and in the ovary no significant change was observed. Moreover, the expression of Hsd17b1 in the ovary was significantly upregulated after injection with flutamide (P < 0.05). These findings introduce the characteristics of the flounder Hsd17b in subfamily, which contribute to our understanding of the regulation of sex steroid hormone synthesis in fish gonadal development.


Statistical methods for testing X chromosome variant associations: application to sex-specific characteristics of bipolar disorder.

Bipolar disorder (BD) affects both sexes, but important sex differences exist with respect to its symptoms and comorbidities. For example, rapid cycling (RC) is more prevalent in females, and alcohol use disorder (AUD) is more prevalent in males. We hypothesize that X chromosome variants may be associated with sex-specific characteristics of BD. Few studies have explored the role of the X chromosome in BD, which is complicated by X chromosome inactivation (XCI). This process achieves "dosage compensation" for many X chromosome genes by silencing one of the two copies in females, and most statistical methods either ignore that XCI occurs or falsely assume that one copy is inactivated at all loci. We introduce new statistical methods that do not make these assumptions.

Women, especially following menopause, are known to have worse outcomes following acute ischemic stroke. One primary postulated biological mechanism for worse outcomes in older women is a reduction in the vasculoprotective effects of estrogen. Using the INTERRseCT cohort, a multicentre international observational cohort studying recanalization in acute ischemic stroke, we explored the effects of sex, and modifying effects of age, on neuroradiological predictors of recanalization including robustness of leptomeningeal collaterals, thrombus burden and thrombus permeability. Ordinal regression analyses were used to examine the relationship between sex and each of the neuroradiological markers. Further, we explored both multiplicative and additive interactions between age and sex. All patients (n = 575) from INTERRseCT were included. Mean age was 70.2 years (SD: 13.1) and 48.5% were women. In the unadjusted model, female sex was associated with better collaterals (OR 1.37, 95% CIs: 1.01-1.85), however this relationship was not significant after adjusting for age and relevant comorbidities. There were no significant interactions between age and sex. In a large prospective international cohort, we found no association between sex and radiological predictors of recanalization including leptomeningeal collaterals, thrombus permeability and thrombus burden.


Characteristics of a Diverse Cohort of Stroke Patients with SARS-CoV-2 and Outcome by Sex.
