Background: Over recent years, the use of decision aids to promote shared decision-making have been examined. Studies on patient education and on continuing medical education for physicians are less common. This review analyzes intervention and evaluation studies on patient education and continuing medical education which aim to enhance shared decision-making. The following study parameters are of interest: Study designs, objectives, numbers of participants in the education courses, interventions, primary results, and quality of the studies. Methods: We systematically searched for suitable studies in two databases (Pubmed and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews) from the beginning of April through to mid-June 2016. Results: 16 studies from a total of 462 hits were included: Three studies on patient education and 13 studies on continuing medical education for physicians. Overall, the study parameters were heterogeneous. Major differences were found between the courses; how the courses were conducted, their length, and participants. Conclusions: The differences found in the studies made it difficult to compare the interventions and the results. There is a need for studies that systematically evaluate and further develop interventions in this area to promote shared decision-making.
Patients with orthopedic conditions frequently use the internet to find health information. Patient education that is distributed online may form an easily accessible, time- and cost-effective alternative to education delivered through traditional channels such as one-on-one consultations or booklets. However, no systematic evidence for the comparative effectiveness of Web-based educational interventions exists.
Dyslipidemia management is crucial to reduce mortality and morbidity from cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Patients must be educated and empowered to enable them to manage their own diseases. Various methods of patient education, such as patient-centered education (PCE) or non-PCE (such as didactic education or any traditional form of education), have been implemented.
Hospital falls remain a frequent and debilitating problem worldwide. Most hospital falls prevention strategies have targeted clinician education, environmental modifications, assistive devices, hospital systems and medication reviews. The role that patients can play in preventing falls whilst in hospital has received less attention. This critical review scopes patient falls education interventions for hospitals. The quality of the educational designs under-pinning patient falls education programmes was also evaluated. The outcomes of patient-centred falls prevention programs were considered for a range of hospital settings and diagnoses.

This meta-analysis aimed to determine the effect of educational intervention on the quality of bowel preparation before colonoscopy.
Health literacy enables the patients in understanding the basic healthcare information and taking informed health decisions; thus, it is a desirable goal of any healthcare system. It increases patients' adherence to treatment, improves the quality of care and eases the overall burden on the healthcare system. In recent years, technological solutions are being increasingly used in educating patients and achieving better health literacy. Augmented reality (AR) provides powerful, contextual and situated learning experiences and supplements the real world with virtual objects. AR could potentially be an effective learning methodology for the patients, thus, warranting a comprehensive overview of the current state of AR in patient education and health literacy.
Patient education is recommended as an essential component of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery (ERAS) protocols. However, there are many uncertainties regarding content and methodological criteria, which may have a significant impact on the effectiveness of the intervention. The aim of this review is to assess the effect of preoperative patient education on postoperative recovery in abdominal surgery and to examine different patient education strategies for their effectiveness.
A large variety of oral anticancer agents have become available and while at first glance these therapies appear to provide only benefits, patients have expressed their need for educational interventions and raised safety issues. Although both patients and providers have recognized patient education's importance, and an interplay with safety has been acknowledged, no systematic reviews of the literature that summarize all of the current evidence related to patient education's outcomes for patients who receive oral anticancer agents have been performed to date. Accordingly, this systematic review will attempt to fill the gap in the literature as well as to map (1) contents, (2) methodologies, (3) settings, (4) timing/duration, and (5) healthcare professionals involved.
This descriptive study analyzed 1849 international and 212 Korean studies to explore the main topics of nursing research on accidental falls. We extracted only nouns from each abstract, and four topics were identified through topic modeling, which were divided into aspects of fall prevention and its consequences. "Fall prevention program and scale" is popular among studies on the validity of fall risk assessment tools and the development of exercise and education programs. "Nursing strategy for fall prevention" is common in studies on nurse education programs and practice guidelines to improve the quality of patient safety care. "Hospitalization by fall injury" is used in studies about delayed discharge, increased costs, and deaths of subjects with fall risk factors hospitalized at medical institutions due to fall-related injuries. "Long-term care facility falls" is popular in studies about interventions to prevent fall injuries that occur in conjunction with dementia in long-term care facilities. It is necessary to establish a system and policy for fall prevention in Korean medical institutions. This study confirms the trends in domestic and international fall-related research, suggesting the need for studies to address insufficient fall-related policies and systems and translational research to be applied in clinical trials.
Clinician-patient communication is an integral component in providing quality medical care. However, research on clinician-patient communication has shown overall patient discontent with provider communication skills. While virtual reality (VR) is readily used for procedural-based learning in medical education, its potential for teaching patient-facing communication skills remains unexplored. This scoping review aims to evaluate the effectiveness and feasibility of VR applications used for patient-facing communication skills development in medical education.
Several clinician training interventions have been developed in the past decade to address serious illness communication. While numerous studies report on clinician attitudes and confidence, little is reported on individual education modalities and their impact on actual behavior change and patient outcomes.
Despite the widespread implementation of competency-based education, evidence of ensuing enhanced patient care and cost-benefit remains scarce. This narrative review uses the Kirkpatrick/Phillips model to investigate the patient-related and organizational effects of graduate competency-based medical education for five basic anesthetic procedures.
Outreach programs are considered a key strategy for providing services to underserved populations and play a central role in delivering health-care services. To address this challenge, knowledge relevant to global health outreach programs has recently been expanded. The aims of this study were to analyze the knowledge structure and understand the trends in aspects over time and across regions using text network analysis with NetMiner 4.0. Data analysis by frequency, time and region showed that the central keywords such as patient, care, service and community were found to be highly related to the area, target population, purpose and type of services within the knowledge structure of outreach. As a result of performing topic modeling, knowledge structure in this area consisted of five topics: patient-centered care, HIV care continuum, services related to a specific disease, community-based health-care services and research and education on health programs. Our results newly identified that patient-centered care, specific disease and population have been growing more crucial for all times and countries by the examination of major trends in health-care related outreach research. These findings help health professionals, researchers and policymakers in nursing and public health fields in understanding and developing health-care-related outreach practices and suggest future research direction.
It has been shown that providing patients with access to their own electronic health records (EHR) can enhance their medical understanding and provide clinically relevant benefits. However, languages that are difficult for non-medical professionals to comprehend are prevalent in the EHR notes, including medical terms, abbreviations, and domain-specific language patterns. Furthermore, limited average health literacy forms a barrier for patients to understand their health condition, impeding their ability to actively participate in managing their health. Therefore, we are developing a system to retrieve EHR note-tailored online consumer-oriented health education materials to improve patients' health knowledge of their own clinical conditions. Our experiments show that queries combining key concepts and other medical concepts present in the EHR notes significantly outperform (more than doubled) a baseline system of using the phrases from topic models.
Podcasts are increasingly being used for medical education, both within teaching institutions and on an international scale by major journals. To date, there are no evidence-based guidelines for the development of educational podcasts. To review the state of the literature, MEDLINE, SCOPUS, and ERIC were searched in May 2016 for articles describing audio format podcasts used in medical education. Eighty-four articles met inclusion criteria. A qualitative synthesis of the evidence was done using Kirkpatrick's model for evaluating outcomes. Twenty-four articles described reaction outcomes, eleven described learning outcomes, and one described behavioral outcomes. None measured patient impact. The literature demonstrates that podcasts are both feasible and accepted by learners. The mean length of reported podcasts was 18 minutes, which falls within the recommended range in at least one paper, and is consistent with reported listener preference. Interview format, clear disclosures, and accurate information were reported as desirable. There is limited evidence showing the efficacy of podcasts as teaching tools, or regarding best practices in making podcasts. More rigorous studies evaluating efficacy, changes in behavior, and changes in patient outcomes need to be performed in order to prove podcasts' value and to justify production costs.

Introduction: Medicine's increasing technologic complexities can constrain medical learners' development of patient-centered communication skills, and adversely impact patient outcomes. Although humanities-based clinical education interventions encourage reflective practice and promote the practice of holistic patient care, it remains unclear which educational interventions are the most effective. Methods : A search was conducted in PubMed, utilising the terms 'humanities', 'humanism', 'art', 'medicine', 'narrative medicine', and 'medical education' to identify relevant English-language articles. Discussion with experts yielded further titles, such that 156 articles were reviewed and summarised, with particular focus on those describing novel curricular interventions. Results: 108/156 (69%) of the articles were commentaries or reflections; 48/156 (31%) reported on curricular interventions. Of the latter, the majority incorporated literature or ethics, typically delivered in small-group format. Only ten interventions included impact assessment measures beyond learner satisfaction. Five of these used qualitative evaluations; three, quantitative scales; and two, both. Discussion: Humanities-based curricular interventions with a focus on literature or ethics were more common than those involving the visual or performing arts. Among the studies that evaluated these curricular interventions, the majority employed qualitative measures. Collaborative teaching between clinicians, arts educators and patients may be considered in order to bridge the gap between science and humanities.
Chronic pain is a widespread problem in the field of pediatrics. Many interventions to ameliorate pain-related dysfunction have a biobehavioral focus. As treatments for chronic pain (e.g., increased movement) often stand in stark contrast to treatments for an acute injury (e.g., rest), providing a solid rationale for treatment is necessary to gain patient and parent buy-in. Most pain treatment interventions incorporate psychoeducation, or pain neuroscience education (PNE), as an essential component, and in some cases, as a stand-alone approach. The current topical review focuses on the state of pain neuroscience education and its application to pediatric chronic pain. As very little research has examined pain neuroscience education in pediatrics, we aim to describe this emerging area and catalyze further work on this important topic. As the present literature has generally focused on adults with chronic pain, pain neuroscience education merits further attention in the realm of pediatric pain in order to be tailored and implemented in this population.
Health communication research and guidelines often recommend that medical terminology be avoided when communicating with patients due to their limited understanding of medical terms. However, growing numbers of e-patients use the Internet to equip themselves with specialized biomedical knowledge that is couched in medical terms, which they then share on participatory media, such as online patient forums.
