Quantitative analysis of hormones and inflammatory cytokines in Chlamydia trachomatis-infected women with tubal ectopic pregnancy and early intrauterine pregnancy.

In this data, non-pregnant women during the menstrual cycle, women with normal intrauterine pregnancy (IUP), and women with tubal ectopic pregnancy (EP) after informed consent were included. The serum levels of 17β-estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, beta-human chorionic gonadotropin, interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-4, IL-6, IL-7, IL-8, IL-10, tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ), epidermal growth factor, the Chlamydia (C.) trachomatis IgG and HSP60 were analyzed. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to assess the diagnostic discrimination of tubal EP and gestational age-matched IUP. Our data show that C. trachomatis infection is associated with IL-8 levels, which had excellent discriminative validity in positively identifying tubal EP (concomitant with C. trachomatis infection) from IUP and non-pregnant conditions regardless of C. trachomatis infection.


Single-cell transcriptome analysis identifies a unique tumor cell type producing multiple hormones in ectopic ACTH and CRH secreting pheochromocytoma.

Ectopic Cushing's syndrome due to ectopic ACTH&CRH-secreting by pheochromocytoma is extremely rare and can be fatal if not properly diagnosed. It remains unclear whether a unique cell type is responsible for multiple hormones secreting. In this work, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing to three different anatomic tumor tissues and one peritumoral tissue based on a rare case with ectopic ACTH&CRH-secreting pheochromocytoma. And in addition to that, three adrenal tumor specimens from common pheochromocytoma and adrenocortical adenomas were also involved in the comparison of tumor cellular heterogeneity. A total of 16 cell types in the tumor microenvironment were identified by unbiased cell clustering of single-cell transcriptomic profiles from all specimens. Notably, we identified a novel multi-functionally chromaffin-like cell type with high expression of both POMC (the precursor of ACTH) and CRH, called ACTH+&CRH + pheochromocyte. We hypothesized that the molecular mechanism of the rare case harbor Cushing's syndrome is due to the identified novel tumor cell type, that is, the secretion of ACTH had a direct effect on the adrenal gland to produce cortisol, while the secretion of CRH can indirectly stimulate the secretion of ACTH from the anterior pituitary. Besides, a new potential marker (GAL) co-expressed with ACTH and CRH might be involved in the regulation of ACTH secretion. The immunohistochemistry results confirmed its multi-functionally chromaffin-like properties with positive staining for CRH, POMC, ACTH, GAL, TH, and CgA. Our findings also proved to some extent the heterogeneity of endothelial and immune microenvironment in different adrenal tumor subtypes.


[Pheochromocytoma with ectopic secretion of ACTH].

Pheochromocytoma is a tumor displaying a considerable degree of clinical polymorphism both with respect to its location and the secretion of different types of catecholamines and its capacity to synthesize several ectopic hormones. The present work reports on a case of pheochromocytoma with secretion of ACTH that exhibited several clinical and biological peculiarities. Firstly, the clinical picture of the patient was characterized by a predominance of manifestations of adrenal hyperfunction as compared with those of the original tumor. Secondly a striking finding was an important degree of neutrophilia without band forms and a marked hypokalemia produced by the joint secretion of catecholamines and steroid hormones, as demonstrated later. Finally, the images obtained with computerized tomography were very characteristic, such that together with the above data it was possible to establish a preoperative diagnosis.


Cushing's syndrome secondary to ectopic corticotropin-releasing hormone-adrenocorticotropin secretion.

A 47-yr-old woman with severe Cushing's syndrome had a bronchial carcinoid secreting ACTH and corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) and associated pituitary corticotroph hyperplasia. While the clinical picture was consistent with the ectopic ACTH syndrome, the biochemical pattern was that of pituitary ACTH-dependent hypercortisolism. Both plasma ACTH and CRH levels were high. However, while plasma ACTH increased during metyrapone administration and decreased during administration of high dose of dexamethasone, plasma CRH levels did not change, suggesting a direct pituitary response to these testing maneuvers. Immunoperoxidase staining of the tumor tissue confirmed the presence of ACTH and CRH, and the finding of an ACTH and a CRH concentration gradient across the tumor bed indicated that the tumor was actively secreting these two hormones. Cytochemical heterogeneity was seen in the tumor, in which two distinct populations of cells, one secreting ACTH and beta-endorphin and the other secreting CRH, were identified. This patient, thus, had an unusual syndrome of ectopic ACTH and ectopic CRH secretion.


Ectopic expression of Arabidopsis glycosyltransferase UGT85A5 enhances salt stress tolerance in tobacco.

Abiotic stresses greatly influence plant growth and productivity. While glycosyltransferases are widely distributed in plant kingdom, their biological roles in response to abiotic stresses are largely unknown. In this study, a novel Arabidopsis glycosyltransferase gene UGT85A5 was identified as significantly induced by salt stress. Ectopic expression of UGT85A5 in tobacco enhanced the salt stress tolerance in the transgenic plants. There were higher seed germination rates, better plant growth and less chlorophyll loss in transgenic lines compared to wild type plants under salt stress. This enhanced tolerance of salt stress was correlated with increased accumulations of proline and soluble sugars, but with decreases in malondialdehyde accumulation and Na(+)/K(+) ratio in UGT85A5-expressing tobacco. Furthermore, during salt stress, expression of several carbohydrate metabolism-related genes including those for sucrose synthase, sucrose-phosphate synthase, hexose transporter and a group2 LEA protein were obviously upregulated in UGT85A5-expressing transgenic plants compared with wild type controls. Thus, these findings suggest a specific protective role of this glycosyltransferase against salt stress and provide a genetic engineering strategy to improve salt tolerance of crops.


At a supra-physiological concentration, human sexual hormones act as quorum-sensing inhibitors.

N-acylhomoserine lactone (AHL)-mediated quorum-sensing (QS) regulates virulence functions in plant and animal pathogens such as Agrobacterium tumefaciens and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. A chemolibrary of more than 3500 compounds was screened using two bacterial AHL-biosensors to identify QS-inhibitors (QSIs). The purity and structure of 15 QSIs selected through this screening were verified using HPLC MS/MS tools and their activity tested on the A. tumefaciens and P. aeruginosa bacterial models. The IC50 value of the identified QSIs ranged from 2.5 to 90 µg/ml, values that are in the same range as those reported for the previously identified QSI 4-nitropyridine-N-oxide (IC50 24 µg/ml). Under the tested culture conditions, most of the identified QSIs did not exhibit bacteriostatic or bactericidal activities. One third of the tested QSIs, including the plant compound hordenine and the human sexual hormone estrone, decreased the frequency of the QS-regulated horizontal transfer of the tumor-inducing (Ti) plasmid in A. tumefaciens. Hordenine, estrone as well as its structural relatives estriol and estradiol, also decreased AHL accumulation and the expression of six QS-regulated genes (lasI, lasR, lasB, rhlI, rhlR, and rhlA) in cultures of the opportunist pathogen P. aeruginosa. Moreover, the ectopic expression of the AHL-receptors RhlR and LasR of P. aeruginosa in E. coli showed that their gene-regulatory activity was affected by the QSIs. Finally, modeling of the structural interactions between the human hormones and AHL-receptors LasR of P. aeruginosa and TraR of A. tumefaciens confirmed the competitive binding capability of the human sexual hormones. This work indicates potential interferences between bacterial and eukaryotic hormonal communications.


Multipotential phenotypic expression of genes encoding peptide hormones in rat insulinoma cell lines.

The developmental origin of the four phenotypically distinct hormone-producing islet cells (insulin, glucagon, somatostatin, pancreatic polypeptide) is unclear. To investigate the potential for phenotypic differentiation of islet cells, we prepared several clonal cell lines from a radiation-induced rat islet tumor and analyzed them for insulin, glucagon, and somatostatin gene expression by cDNA hybridization, immunocytochemistry, and radioimmunoassay. We found expression of all three genes in the tumor and in the parental cell line and mixed variable phenotypes in the clonal lines derived from the parental line. We also observed the ectopic expression of the angiotensinogen gene in the tumor and the cell lines. The relative levels of hormonal gene expression differed among the cell lines but remained fixed during continuous passage. The three islet hormone mRNAs were larger compared to the pancreas owing to longer poly(A) tracts. These observations indicate that neoplastic islet cells retain the potential to differentiate into hormone-specific cellular phenotypes and may mimic developmental pathways of the pancreatic islets.

Malignant Pheochromocytomas/Paragangliomas and Ectopic Hormonal Secretion: A Case Series and Review of the Literature.

Malignant pheochromocytomas (PCs) and paragangliomas (PGLs) are rare neuroendocrine neoplasms defined by the presence of distant metastases. There is currently a relatively paucity of data regarding the natural history of PCs/PGLs and the optimal approach to their treatment. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical, biochemical, imaging, genetic and histopathological characteristics of fourteen patients with metastatic PCs/PGLs diagnosed over 15 years, along with their response to treatment. Patients were followed-up for a median of six years (range: 1-14 years). Six patients had synchronous metastases and the remaining developed metastases after a median of four years (range 2-10 years). Genetic analysis of seven patients revealed that three harbored succinate dehydrogenase subunit B/D gene (SDHB/D) mutations. Hormonal hypersecretion occurred in 70% of patients; normetanephrine, either alone or with other concomitant hormones, was the most frequent secretory component. Patients were administered multiple first and subsequent treatments including surgery (n = 12), chemotherapy (n = 7), radionuclide therapy (n = 2) and radiopeptides (n = 5). Seven patients had stable disease, four had progressive disease and three died. Ectopic hormonal secretion is rare and commonly encountered in benign PCs. Ectopic secretion of interleukin-6 in one of our patients, prompted a literature review of ectopic hormonal secretion, particularly from metastatic PCs/PGLs. Only four cases of metastatic PC/PGLs with confirmed ectopic secretion of hormones or peptides have been described so far.


Ectopic Leptin Production by Intraocular Pancreatic Islet Organoids Ameliorates the Metabolic Phenotype of ob/ob Mice.

The pancreatic islets of Langerhans consist of endocrine cells that secrete peptide hormones into the blood circulation in response to metabolic stimuli. When transplanted into the anterior chamber of the eye (ACE), pancreatic islets engraft and maintain morphological features of native islets as well as islet-specific vascularization and innervation patterns. In sufficient amounts, intraocular islets are able to maintain glucose homeostasis in diabetic mice. Islet organoids (pseudo-islets), which are formed by self-reassembly of islet cells following disaggregation and genetic manipulation, behave similarly to native islets. Here, we tested the hypothesis that genetically engineered intraocular islet organoids can serve as production sites for leptin. To test this hypothesis, we chose the leptin-deficient ob/ob mouse as a model system, which becomes severely obese, hyperinsulinemic, hyperglycemic, and insulin resistant. We generated a Tet-OFF-based beta-cell-specific adenoviral expression construct for mouse leptin, which allowed efficient transduction of native beta-cells, optical monitoring of leptin expression by co-expressed fluorescent proteins, and the possibility to switch-off leptin expression by treatment with doxycycline. Intraocular transplantation of islet organoids formed from transduced islet cells, which lack functional leptin receptors, to ob/ob mice allowed optical monitoring of leptin expression and ameliorated their metabolic phenotype by improving bodyweight, glucose tolerance, serum insulin, and C-peptide levels.


Renal neuroendocrine tumors: clinical and molecular pathology with an emphasis on frequent association with ectopic Cushing syndrome.

Renal neuroendocrine tumors (RenNETs) are rare malignancies with largely unknown biology, hormone expression, and genetic abnormalities. This study aims to improve our understanding of the RenNETs with emphasis of functional, hormonal, and genetic features. Surgically resected RenNETs (N = 13) were retrieved, and immunohistochemistry and next-generation sequencing (NGS) were performed in all cases. In addition, all published RenNETs were systematically reviewed. Our cohort (4 men and 9 women, mean age 42, mean tumor size 7.6 cm) included 2 patients with Cushing syndrome (CS). WHO grade (23% G1, 54% G2, and 23% G3) and tumor progression did not correlate. CS-associated RenNETs (CS-RenNETs) showed a solid and eosinophilic histology and stained for ACTH, while the remaining non-functioning tumors had a trabecular pattern and expressed variably hormones somatostatin (91%), pancreatic polypeptide (63%), glucagon (54%), and serotonin (18%). The transcription factors ISL1 and SATB2 were expressed in all non-functioning, but not in CS-RenNETs. NGS revealed no pathogenic alterations or gene fusions. In the literature review (N = 194), 15 (8%) of the patients had hormonal syndromes, in which CS being the most frequent (7/15). Large tumor size and presence of metastasis were associated with shorter patients' survival (p < 0.01). RenNETs present as large tumors with metastases. CS-RenNETs differ through ACTH production and solid-eosinophilic histology from the non-functioning trabecular RenNETs that produce pancreas-related hormones and express ISL1 and SATB2. MEN1 or DAXX/ARTX abnormalities and fusion genes are not detected in RenNETs, indicating a distinct yet unknown molecular pathogenesis.


Ovarian-like differentiation in eutopic and ectopic endometrioses with aberrant FSH receptor, INSL3 and GATA4/6 expression.

Endometriosis, the hormone-dependent extrauterine dissemination of endometrial tissue outside the uterus, affects 5-15% of women of reproductive age. Pathogenesis remains poorly understood as well as the estrogen production by endometriotic tissue yielding autocrine growth. Estrogens (E2) are normally produced by the ovaries. We investigated whether aberrant "ovarian-like" differentiation occurred in endometriosis. 69 women, with (n = 38) and without (n = 31) histologically proven endometriosis were recruited. Comparative RT-qPCR was performed on 20 genes in paired eutopic and ectopic lesions, together with immunohistochemistry. Functional studies were performed in primary cultures of epithelial endometriotic cells (EEC). A broaden ovarian-like differentiation was found in half eutopic and all ectopic endometriosis with aberrant expression of transcripts and protein for the transcription factors GATA4 and GATA6 triggering ovarian differentiation, for the FSH receptor (FSHR) and the ovarian hormone INSL3. Like in ovaries the FSHR induced aromatase, the key enzyme in E2 production, and vascular factors in EEC. The LH receptor (LHR) was also aberrantly expressed in a subset of ectopic endometriosis (21%) and induced strongly androgen-synthesizing enzymes and INSL3 in EEC, as in ovaries, as well as endometriotic cell growth. The ERK pathway mediates signaling by both hormones. A positive feedback loop occurred through FSHR and LHR-dependent induction of GATA4/6 in EEC, as in ovaries, enhancing the production of the steroidogenic cascade. This work highlights a novel pathophysiological mechanism with a broadly ovarian pattern of differentiation in half eutopic and all ectopic endometriosis. This study provides new tools that might improve the diagnosis of endometriosis in the future.


Bioactive androgens and glucuronidated androgen metabolites are associated with subcutaneous and ectopic skeletal muscle adiposity among older black men.

Aging is associated with declining serum levels of androgenic hormones and with increased skeletal muscle fat infiltration, an emerging risk factor for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Androgens regulate fat mass and glucose homeostasis, but the effect of androgenic hormones on skeletal muscle fat infiltration is largely unknown. Thus, the aim of the current study was to examine the association of serum androgens and their precursors and metabolites with skeletal muscle fat infiltration and T2DM in a black male population group at high risk of T2DM. Serum androgens, estrogens, and androgen precursors and metabolites were measured using mass spectrometry; and calf skeletal muscle fat distribution (subcutaneous and intermuscular fat; skeletal muscle density) was measured using quantitative computed tomography in 472 Afro-Caribbean men 65 years and older. Bioactive androgens, testosterone, free testosterone, and dihydrotestosterone were associated with less skeletal muscle fat infiltration (r = -0.14 to -0.18, P < .05) and increased skeletal muscle density (r = 0.10 to 0.14, P < .05), independent of total adiposity. In addition, glucuronidated androgen metabolites were associated with less subcutaneous fat (r = -0.11 to -0.15, P < .05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified an increased level of 3α-diol-3 glucuronide (odds ratio = 1.38, P < .01) and a decreased level of dihydrotestosterone (odds ratio = 0.66, P < .01) to be significantly associated with T2DM. Our findings suggest that, in elderly black men, independent of total adiposity, bioactive androgens and glucuronidated androgen metabolites may play previously unrecognized role in skeletal muscle fat distribution. Longitudinal studies are needed to further evaluate the relationship between androgens and androgen metabolites with changes in skeletal muscle fat distribution with aging and the incidence of T2DM.


Comprehensive Analysis of Rice Laccase Gene (OsLAC) Family and Ectopic Expression of OsLAC10 Enhances Tolerance to Copper Stress in Arabidopsis.

Laccases are encoded by a multigene family and widely distributed in plant genomes where they play roles oxidizing monolignols to produce higher-order lignin involved in plant development and stress responses. We identified 30 laccase genes (OsLACs) from rice, which can be divided into five subfamilies, mostly expressed during early development of the endosperm, growing roots, and stems. OsLACs can be induced by hormones, salt, drought, and heavy metals stresses. The expression level of OsLAC10 increased 1200-fold after treatment with 20 μM Cu for 12 h. The laccase activities of OsLAC10 were confirmed in an Escherichia coli expression system. Lignin accumulation increased in the roots of Arabidopsis over-expressing OsLAC10 (OsLAC10-OX) compared to wild-type controls. After growth on 1/2 Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing toxic levels of Cu for seven days, roots of the OsLAC10-OX lines were significantly longer than those of the wild type. Compared to control plants, the Cu concentration decreased significantly in roots of the OsLAC10-OX line under hydroponic conditions. These results provided insights into the evolutionary expansion and functional divergence of OsLAC family. In addition, OsLAC10 is likely involved in lignin biosynthesis, and reduces the uptake of Cu into roots required for Arabidopsis to develop tolerance to Cu.


Brn-4 transcription factor expression targeted to the early developing mouse pancreas induces ectopic glucagon gene expression in insulin-producing beta cells.

The endocrine pancreas is comprised of beta and alpha cells producing the glucostatic hormones insulin and glucagon, respectively, and arises during development by the differentiation of stem/progenitor cells in the foregut programmed by the beta cell lineage-specific homeodomain protein Idx-1. Brain-4 (Brn-4) is expressed in the pancreatic anlaga of the mouse foregut at e10 in the alpha cells and transactivates glucagon gene expression. We expressed Brn-4 in pancreatic precursors or beta cell lineage in transgenic mice by placing it under either Idx-1 or insulin promoter (rat insulin II promoter) control, respectively. Idx-1 expression occurs at developmental day e8.5, and insulin expression occurs at e9.5, respectively. Misexpression of Brn-4 by the Idx-1 promoter results in ectopic expression of the proglucagon gene in insulin-expressing pancreatic beta cells, whereas misexpression by rat insulin II promoter did not. The early developmental expression of Brn-4 appears to be a dominant regulator of the glucagon expressing alpha cell lineage, even in the context of the beta cell lineage.


Ectopic Expression of the Wild Grape WRKY Transcription Factor VqWRKY52 in Arabidopsis thaliana Enhances Resistance to the Biotrophic Pathogen Powdery Mildew But Not to the Necrotrophic Pathogen Botrytis cinerea.

WRKY transcription factors are known to play important roles in plant responses to biotic stresses. We previously showed that the expression of the WRKY gene, VqWRKY52, from Chinese wild Vitis quinquangularis was strongly induced 24 h post inoculation with powdery mildew. In this study, we analyzed the expression levels of VqWRKY52 following treatment with the defense related hormones salicylic acid (SA) and methyl jasmonate, revealing that VqWRKY52 was strongly induced by SA but not JA. We characterized the VqWRKY52 gene, which encodes a WRKY III gene family member, and found that ectopic expression in Arabidopsis thaliana enhanced resistance to powdery mildew and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000, but increased susceptibility to Botrytis cinerea, compared with wild type (WT) plants. The transgenic A. thaliana lines displayed strong cell death induced by the biotrophic powdery mildew pathogen, the hemibiotrophic P. syringe pathogen and the necrotrophic pathogen B. cinerea. In addition, the relative expression levels of various defense-related genes were compared between the transgenic A. thaliana lines and WT plants following the infection by different pathogens. Collectively, the results indicated that VqWRKY52 plays essential roles in the SA dependent signal transduction pathway and that it can enhance the hypersensitive response cell death triggered by microbial pathogens.


Allelic Variants in Established Hypopituitarism Genes Expand Our Knowledge of the Phenotypic Spectrum.

We report four allelic variants (three novel) in three genes previously established as causal for hypopituitarism or related disorders. A novel homozygous variant in the growth hormone gene, GH1 c.171delT (p.Phe 57Leufs*43), was found in a male patient with severe isolated growth hormone deficiency (IGHD) born to consanguineous parents. A hemizygous SOX3 allelic variant (p.Met304Ile) was found in a male patient with IGHD and hypoplastic anterior pituitary. YASARA, a tool to evaluate protein stability, suggests that p.Met304Ile destabilizes the SOX3 protein (ΔΔG = 2.49 kcal/mol). A rare, heterozygous missense variant in the TALE homeobox protein gene, TGIF1 (c.268C>T:p.Arg90Cys) was found in a patient with combined pituitary hormone deficiency (CPHD), diabetes insipidus, and syndromic features of holoprosencephaly (HPE). This variant was previously reported in a patient with severe holoprosencephaly and shown to affect TGIF1 function. A novel heterozygous TGIF1 variant (c.82T>C:p.Ser28Pro) was identified in a patient with CPHD, pituitary aplasia and ectopic posterior lobe. Both TGIF1 variants have an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance with incomplete penetrance. In conclusion, we have found allelic variants in three genes in hypopituitarism patients. We discuss these variants and associated patient phenotypes in relation to previously reported variants in these genes, expanding our knowledge of the phenotypic spectrum in patient populations.

The messenger RNA (mRNA) 3' untranslated regions (3' UTRs), as cis-regulated elements bound by microRNAs (miRNAs), affect their gene translation. However, the role of the trans-regulation of 3' UTRs during heart dysfunction remains elusive. Compared with administration of angiogenic factor with G-patch and forkhead-associate domains 1 (Aggf1), ectopic expression of Aggf1 with its 3' UTR significantly suppressed cardiac dysfunction in angiotensin II-infused mice, with upregulated expression of both Aggf1 and myeloid cell leukemia 1 (Mcl1). Along their 3' UTRs, Mcl1 and Aggf1 mRNAs share binding sites for the same miRNAs, including miR-105, miR-101, and miR-93. We demonstrated that the protein-coding Mcl1 and Aggf1 mRNAs communicate and co-regulate each other's expression through competition for these three miRNAs that target both transcripts via their 3' UTRs. Our results indicate that Aggf1 3' UTR, as a trans-regulatory element, accelerates the cardioprotective role of Aggf1 in response to hypertensive conditions by elevating Mcl1 expression. Our work broadens the scope of gene therapy targets and provides a new insight into gene therapy strategies involving 3' UTRs.


Arabidopsis Carboxylesterase 20 Binds Strigolactone and Increases Branches and Tillers When Ectopically Expressed in Arabidopsis and Maize.

Severe drought stress can delay maize silk emergence relative to the pollen shedding period, resulting in poor fertilization and reduced grain yield. Methods to minimize the delay in silking could thus improve yield stability. An Arabidopsis enhancer-tagged carboxylesterase 20 (AtCXE20) line was identified in a drought tolerance screen. Ectopic expression of AtCXE20 in Arabidopsis and maize resulted in phenotypes characteristic of strigolactone (SL)-deficient mutants, including increased branching and tillering, decreased plant height, delayed senescence, hyposensitivity to ethylene, and reduced flavonols. Maize silk growth was increased by AtCXE20 overexpression, and this phenotype was partially complemented by exogenous SL treatments. In drought conditions, the transgenic maize plants silked earlier than controls and had decreased anthesis-silking intervals. The purified recombinant AtCXE20 protein bound SL in vitro, as indicated by SL inhibiting AtCXE20 esterase activity and altering AtCXE20 intrinsic fluorescence. Homology modeling of the AtCXE20 three-dimensional (3D) protein structure revealed a large hydrophobic binding pocket capable of accommodating, but not hydrolyzing SLs. The AtCXE20 protein concentration in transgenic maize tissues was determined by mass spectrometry to be in the micromolar range, well-above known endogenous SL concentrations. These results best support a mechanism where ectopic expression of AtCXE20 with a strong promoter effectively lowers the concentration of free SL by sequestration. This study revealed an agriculturally important role for SL in maize silk growth and provided a new approach for altering SL levels in plants.


Phaeochromocytomas overexpress insulin transcript and produce insulin.

Phaeochromocytomas are tumours originating in the medulla of the adrenal gland. They produce catecholamines, and some tumours also produce ectopic hormones. Two types of glucose imbalances occur in phaeochromocytoma patients, hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemic attacks. Therefore, we tested whether insulin transcript (INS), insulin, and a hybrid read-through transcript between exons from insulin and insulin-like growth factor 2 (INS-IGF2) were expressed in phaeochromocytomas.
