[Pneumatic dilatation in patients with esophageal achalasia].

  • J Ferrandiz‎ et al.
  • Revista de gastroenterologia del Peru : organo oficial de la Sociedad de Gastroenterologia del Peru‎
  • 1993‎

From October 1984 to March 1992, 21 patients of Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen-IPSS, Lima, Perú, with esophageal achalasia were treated with pneumatic dilatation using a 3.5 cm diameter Rider-Moeller balloon. The mean age was 40.5 years (range: 24-54). Six were men and 15 women. The mean time with dysphagia previous to treatment was 5.3 years. A total of 29 sessions were performed, 1.38 sessions per patient. The follow-up of the first 10 patients was carried for a mean time of 48.3 months (range:6-91). A satisfactory response to treatment was obtained in 8 patients (80%). Two patients (20%) relapsed after 2 and 3 treatment sessions needing surgery. One patient suffered a esophageal perforation recovering after surgical treatment. We conclude that pneumatic dilatation with Rider-Moeller balloon is a safe and not difficult medical procedure for esophagus achalasia.

Endometrial receptivity is required for successful implantation and pregnancy. Despite the remaining controversy, many studies have shown that ultrasonographic endometrial thickness can be considered as an indicator of endometrial receptivity.

Characteristics of perivascular space dilatation in normal aging.

  • Chang-Hyun Park‎ et al.
  • Human brain mapping‎
  • 2023‎

The increased incidence of dilated perivascular spaces (dPVSs) visible on MRI has been observed with advancing age, but the relevance of PVS dilatation to normal aging across the lifespan has yet to be fully clarified. In the current study, we sought to find out the age dependence of dPVSs by exploring changes in different characteristics of PVS dilatation across a wide range of age. For 1220 healthy subjects aged between 18 and 100 years, PVSs were automatically segmented and characteristics of PVS dilatation were assessed in terms of the burden, location, and morphology of PVSs in the white matter (WM) and basal ganglia (BG). A machine learning model using the random forests method was constructed to estimate the subjects' age by employing the PVS features. The constructed machine learning model was able to estimate the age of the subjects with an error of 9.53 years on average (correlation = 0.875). The importance of the PVS features indicated the primary contribution of the burden of PVSs in the BG and the additional contribution of locational and morphological changes of PVSs, specifically peripheral extension and reduced linearity, in the WM to age estimation. Indeed, adding the PVS location or morphology features to the PVS burden features provided an improvement to the performance of age estimation. The age dependence of dPVSs in terms of such various characteristics of PVS dilatation in healthy subjects could provide a more comprehensive reference for detecting brain disease-related PVS dilatation.

Efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine combined with balloon dilatation vs. balloon dilatation alone for achalasia patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

  • Junqian Chen‎ et al.
  • Annals of translational medicine‎
  • 2022‎

Balloon dilatation is widely used for patients with achalasia; however, the efficacy and safety of Chinese medicine combined with balloon dilatation for achalasia patients is still unclear. Therefore, we conducted a meta-analysis to compare the treatment effectiveness of treatment with Chinese medicine plus balloon dilatation versus balloon dilatation alone for patients with achalasia.

Flow Mediated Dilatation and Progression of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms.

  • R Lee‎ et al.
  • European journal of vascular and endovascular surgery : the official journal of the European Society for Vascular Surgery‎
  • 2017‎

Biomarker(s) for prediction of the future progression rate of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) may be useful to stratify the management of individual patients. AAAs are associated with features of systemic inflammation and endothelial dysfunction. Flow mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery is a recognised non-invasive measurement for endothelial function. We hypothesised that FMD is a potential biomarker of AAA progression and reflects the temporal changes of endothelial function during AAA progression.

Gastric Necrosis due to Acute Massive Gastric Dilatation.

  • Ibrahim Aydin‎ et al.
  • Case reports in medicine‎
  • 2013‎

Gastric necrosis due to acute massive gastric dilatation is relatively rare. Vascular reasons, herniation, volvulus, acute gastric dilatation, anorexia, and bulimia nervosa play a role in the etiology of the disease. Early diagnosis and treatment are highly important as the associated morbidity and mortality rates are high. In this case report, we present a case of gastric necrosis due to acute gastric dilatation accompanied with the relevant literature.

Acetylcholine released by endothelial cells facilitates flow-mediated dilatation.

  • Calum Wilson‎ et al.
  • The Journal of physiology‎
  • 2016‎

The endothelium plays a pivotal role in the vascular response to chemical and mechanical stimuli. The endothelium is exquisitely sensitive to ACh, although the physiological significance of ACh-induced activation of the endothelium is unknown. In the present study, we investigated the mechanisms of flow-mediated endothelial calcium signalling. Our data establish that flow-mediated endothelial calcium responses arise from the autocrine action of non-neuronal ACh released by the endothelium.

Real-time PCR confirmed virus presence in brain, proventriculus, and adrenal gland of 3 birds with PDD but not in 4 unaffected birds.

Amitriptyline inhibits bronchoconstriction and directly promotes dilatation of the airways.

  • Paulina Hempel‎ et al.
  • Respiratory research‎
  • 2023‎

The standard therapy for bronchial asthma consists of combinations of acute (short-acting ß2-sympathomimetics) and, depending on the severity of disease, additional long-term treatment (including inhaled glucocorticoids, long-acting ß2-sympathomimetics, anticholinergics, anti-IL-4R antibodies). The antidepressant amitriptyline has been identified as a relevant down-regulator of immunological TH2-phenotype in asthma, acting-at least partially-through inhibition of acid sphingomyelinase (ASM), an enzyme involved in sphingolipid metabolism. Here, we investigated the non-immunological role of amitriptyline on acute bronchoconstriction, a main feature of airway hyperresponsiveness in asthmatic disease.

Role of ADAMTS-5 in Aortic Dilatation and Extracellular Matrix Remodeling.

  • Marika Fava‎ et al.
  • Arteriosclerosis, thrombosis, and vascular biology‎
  • 2018‎

Thoracic aortic aneurysm (TAA), a degenerative disease of the aortic wall, is accompanied by changes in the structure and composition of the aortic ECM (extracellular matrix). The ADAMTS (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs) family of proteases has recently been implicated in TAA formation. This study aimed to investigate the contribution of ADAMTS-5 to TAA development.

Endoscopic dilatation as a new technique in managing pediatric duodenal hematoma.

  • Fahad M Alharbi‎ et al.
  • Saudi medical journal‎
  • 2020‎

A duodenal hematoma secondary to blunt-abdominal trauma is a relatively rare condition and is usually managed conservatively. We report a case of a post-traumatic duodenal hematoma after a road trafficc accident in a 10-year-old boy, who presented with progressive vomiting 3 weeks after the accident. The case was managed using serial esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) with dilatation. Controlled radial expansion (CRE) balloon dilatation was performed 4 times over a period of 11 weeks. The patient recovered uneventfully and remained asymptomatic at the 3-month follow-up after the last endoscopic dilatation. This case highlights the applicability of EGD with CRE balloon dilatation as an alternative to surgical treatment in patients with symptomatic post-traumatic duodenal hematomas.

Conducted dilatation to ATP and K+ in rat skeletal muscle arterioles.

  • K A Dora‎
  • Acta physiologica (Oxford, England)‎
  • 2017‎

During exercise in humans, circulating levels of ATP and K+ increase at a time when blood flow increases to satisfy metabolic demand. Both molecules can activate arteriolar K+ channels to stimulate vasodilatation; here, it is established whether conducted dilatation is observed in a skeletal muscle bed.

Treatment for Post-hemorrhagic Ventricular Dilatation: A Multiple-Treatment Meta-Analysis.

  • Liam Mahoney‎ et al.
  • Frontiers in pediatrics‎
  • 2020‎

Objective: To perform a systematic review and multiple-treatment meta-analysis for the treatment of premature infants with post-hemorrhagic ventricular dilatation (PHVD), to prevent death or long-term neuro-disability. Design/Method: A systematic review was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library. A free-word search was performed to identify likely relevant literature intervention trials of PHVD in preterm infants. Initially, network mapping was performed followed by performing a Bayesian random-effects model using the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. Areas under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) were calculated as a measure of the probability that each intervention was likely to be the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. best therapy. Primary outcome measure was death or moderate or severe neurodevelopmental outcome at or beyond 12 months of corrected age. Results: Ten different trials were identified, enrolling 700 individuals (449 for the primary outcome). Seven intervention categories were identified, and of the 15 possible pair comparisons, 6 have been studied directly. In the multiple-treatment meta-analysis, no comparison reached conventional levels of statistical significance. Drainage Irrigation and Fibrinolytic Therapy (DRIFT) had the highest probability of being the best treatment for the primary outcome (82.1%), followed by CSF removal (10.8%), conservative management (6.7%), and then diuretic therapy (0.4%). Conclusions: PHVD is a significant cause of death and disability in developed countries, yet few therapeutic options have so far been trialed. While new therapies are urgently needed for these infants, at present, NMA shows that DRIFT appears to be the most likely candidate to improve outcomes after sIVH.

Tankyrase Inhibition Attenuates Cardiac Dilatation and Dysfunction in Ischemic Heart Failure.

  • Hong Wang‎ et al.
  • International journal of molecular sciences‎
  • 2022‎

Hyperactive poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARP) promote ischemic heart failure (IHF) after myocardial infarction (MI). However, the role of tankyrases (TNKSs), members of the PARP family, in pathogenesis of IHF remains unknown. We investigated the expression and activation of TNKSs in myocardium of IHF patients and MI rats. We explored the cardioprotective effect of TNKS inhibition in an isoproterenol-induced zebrafish HF model. In IHF patients, we observed elevated TNKS2 and DICER and concomitant upregulation of miR-34a-5p and miR-21-5p in non-infarcted myocardium. In a rat MI model, we found augmented TNKS2 and DICER in the border and infarct areas at the early stage of post-MI. We also observed consistently increased TNKS1 in the border and infarct areas and destabilized AXIN in the infarct area from 4 weeks onward, which in turn triggered Wnt/β-catenin signaling. In an isoproterenol-induced HF zebrafish model, inhibition of TNKS activity with XAV939, a TNKSs-specific inhibitor, protected against ventricular dilatation and cardiac dysfunction and abrogated overactivation of Wnt/β-catenin signaling and dysregulation of miR-34a-5p induced by isoproterenol. Our study unravels a potential role of TNKSs in the pathogenesis of IHF by regulating Wnt/β-catenin signaling and possibly modulating miRNAs and highlights the pharmacotherapeutic potential of TNKS inhibition for prevention of IHF.

Krill oil attenuates left ventricular dilatation after myocardial infarction in rats.

  • Linn E Fosshaug‎ et al.
  • Lipids in health and disease‎
  • 2011‎

In the western world, heart failure (HF) is one of the most important causes of cardiovascular mortality. Supplement with n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) has been shown to improve cardiac function in HF and to decrease mortality after myocardial infarction (MI). The molecular structure and composition of n-3 PUFA varies between different marine sources and this may be of importance for their biological effects. Krill oil, unlike fish oil supplements, contains the major part of the n-3 PUFA in the form of phospholipids. This study investigated effects of krill oil on cardiac remodeling after experimental MI. Rats were randomised to pre-treatment with krill oil or control feed 14 days before induction of MI. Seven days post-MI, the rats were examined with echocardiography and rats in the control group were further randomised to continued control feed or krill oil feed for 7 weeks before re-examination with echocardiography and euthanization.
