Tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) may increase respiratory morbidities in young children with bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). Rapid respiratory rates, close proximity to a smoking caregiver, and increased dermal absorption of tobacco smoke components can contribute to systemic exposure. In this study, hair nicotine levels were used as a biomarker of chronic TSE in young children with BPD to determine if hair nicotine levels correlate with caregiver self-report of TSE and respiratory morbidities.
Young people are exposed to an abundance of advertising for unhealthy products (eg, unhealthy foods, tobacco, alcohol). Because of their developing cognition, children may not be able to understand the intent of advertising. However, advertising restrictions often assume that adolescents have critical reasoning capacity and can resist the effects of advertising. This review seeks to assess whether the evidence supports this assumption.
Black youth with type 1 diabetes (T1D) are at heightened risk for suboptimal glycemic control. Studies of neighborhood effects on the health of youth with T1D are limited. The current study investigated the effects of racial residential segregation on the diabetes health of young Black adolescents with T1D.
Natural sheep surfactant, rabbit surfactant, human surfactant, and surfactant TA were compared for in vitro surface properties and for responses of preterm lambs to treatment. Equivalent amounts of sheep, rabbit, and human surfactants were needed to lower the surface tension to less than 10 dynes/cm, whereas four times less surfactant TA similarly lowered the surface tension. Surface-spreading rates were similar for the surfactants. The surface adsorption of the batch of human surfactant tested was much slower than was adsorption of the other surfactants. Ventilation was significantly improved in all surfactant-treated lambs relative to the control lambs, indicating the general efficacy of the surfactant treatments. Overall, surfactant TA had the best in vitro characteristics, yet the preterm lambs treated at birth with surfactant TA had lower PO2 values and higher ventilatory requirements than did the sheep surfactant-treated lambs. The in vivo responses to rabbit surfactant were intermediate between the responses to sheep surfactant and to surfactant TA. Human surfactant resulted in the least effective clinical response. More of the phosphatidylcholine associated with human surfactant and surfactant TA was lost from the alveoli and lung tissue after four hours of ventilation than was lost from sheep or rabbit surfactant-treated lambs. More intravascular radiolabeled albumin leaked into the alveoli of the surfactant TA-treated lambs than sheep or rabbit surfactant-treated lambs. The four surfactants also had different sensitivities to the effects on minimum surface tensions of the soluble proteins present in alveolar washes. The study demonstrates that the range of clinical responses was not predictable based on the in vitro surface properties that we measured.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
Antibiotics have direct effects on the human intestinal microbiota, particularly in infancy. Antibacterial agents promote growth in farm animals by unknown mechanisms, but little is known about their effects on human weight gain. Our aim was to evaluate the impact of antibiotic exposure during infancy on weight and height in healthy Finnish children.
Prenatal causation of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHB) is suggested by a specific pattern of pulmonary vascular remodeling observed immediately after birth in some infants with fatal PPHN. The goal of this study was to determine whether PPHN is associated with fetal exposure to: (1) tobacco and marijuana smoking (ie, contributors to fetal hypoxemia), (2) consumption of aspirin and other nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (ie, inhibitors of prostaglandin synthesis), and (3) cocaine use (ie, a contributor to vasospasm).
Light smoking, consuming a few cigarettes daily, and intermittent, or nondaily, smoking patterns are increasingly common but carry health risks comparable to heavier smoking patterns. Nearly all smokers begin smoking as adolescents, who are at risk for developing these smoking patterns. Previous research suggests that smokers underestimate the risks associated with smoking. The extent to which adolescents perceive light and intermittent smoking as harmful has not been previously assessed.
